Last week upon arrival, I stumbled into the alley where this “hidden gem” is located. Unfortunately, it was at a time when there was no room left. No worries. I went for a nice walk and tried again a week later upon returning to Killarney. A little earlier, so kind of a private meal ; I had the fried shrimp and the lamb shank. Absolutely delicious. Washed it down with a glass of wine and finished with a lemon/dingle gin-style cheesecake. Yummy. Friendly service too.
If you're in Killarney don't miss this little gem, absolutely wonderful great food great staff great atmosphere..
We loved everything about Stonechat! Great cocktails, amazing food, amazing service, cozy and unique booth seating, funny and perfect atmosphere for dinner with friends or romantic dinner for 2 (we did both and had a great time each night!! Highly recommend!!!!
My fiancé and I were vacationing in Killarney for two nights and were looking for a restaurant with both plant-based options and traditional Irish cuisine. We Googled and landed on this amazing place. Tucked away in an adorable street off a happening main road downtown, Stonechat restaurant offered us a charming private booth, without a reservation, in a friendly and hospitable manner. I ordered the plant-based burger, and my better half ordered the seafood chowder and sea bass. This was the best food we had in our entire week all over Ireland. We ate there both nights because the food was so good and the atmosphere so charming. We had more glasses of wine than we probably should have because we didn’t want to leave. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable that they even took the time to write down hiking recommendations. The Stonechat restaurant is a must visit in Killarney. You will regret it if you don’t experience it!

Stonechat Restaurant is an absolute treasure. Perfectly located in the heart of Killarney, it’s tucked away down a charming little alleyway — the kind of place you almost don’t want to tell too many people about because it’s such a find. Inside, the restaurant is full of character, with warm, traditional vibes. Every detail feels carefully thought out, creating an intimate, cosy, and beautifully curated atmosphere that makes you want to linger. The food was exceptional — you can truly taste the freshness and high quality of the ingredients. Everything is homemade, offering a wonderful mix of traditional Irish dishes alongside some unique creations. There’s something for every palate here, with gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options available, yet still embracing all the hearty classics. We’ve been coming to Kerry for many years, and discovering Stonechat was such a pleasant surprise — it’s now firmly on our “must visit” list. The chowder and lamb were standouts, easily the best we’ve had in Kerry. If you’re in Killarney, do yourself a favour and visit. This place is special.
Very good food and very good service. We ate outside, and the nicest thing about it was that because the restaurant is located in a small lane off of Main Street, we were able to enjoy a quiet meal. There are several restaurants along Main Street in Killarney that also offer outdoor dining. However, Main Street is extremely crowded and noisy (at least it was when we visited). Stonechat is just slightly off the beaten path, and was a hidden gem.
Exceptional. Last time I was in the Stonechat restaurant was exactly 10 years ago I enjoyed it that much it was my first port of call this time . The food was absolutely fantastic as usual it never disappoints . The staff couldn’t do enough to help , Viola was a really friendly girl who took time to chat and nothing was too much bother for her . We even got to meet Roger the owner of the Stonechat for the past 25 years a credit to him and his staff . Thanks again and we can’t wait to come back . So if you’re in Killarney don’t miss out on great food and a lovely friendly welcome and great food at the Stonechat .
Great place for a meal, food was lovely. Fab staff, good music and service! Thanks for a great evening. Would recommend 10/10
We were lucky to secure a Saturday booking and were warmly welcomed upon arrival. The atmosphere was lively with great background music. Although our food took some time to arrive, the restaurant was buzzing with activity. We started with the excellent, spicy wings, which were top quality. I enjoyed a nice glass of Chardonnay. For the main course, I chose the medium-rare fillet served on an onion and mushroom base, accompanied by a side of mashed potato—famous, I believe, thanks to Roger! That dish alone deserves a Michelin nod. She opted for the beautifully crisp, hot pan-fried sea bass with light sides, which was simply sublime. Defying convention, we shared a tiramisu, which we discovered means "a pick me up," and it was delicious—perfectly moist with a lovely vanilla ice cream on the side. The service was warm and friendly, especially from Caithriona and the stand-in barman, Karim. I have known chef-patron Roger all my life, so there may be some bias, but if you’re looking for wholesome food at competitive prices in a casual setting, The Stonechat on High Street, Killarney, is well worth a visit. I’m happy to say I’ve never had a bad meal here.

Lovely setting and the people were incredibly friendly but the vegan curry was a little flavourless. Decent serving size and reasonable price $29 AUD).
Our meal at the Stonechat was lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We arrived early on a Saturday evening without a booking and were happy to get a table in one of the booths by the window. The staff were very friendly. There were only two vegan dishes the Moroccan Stew, which they always have, and a vegan burger on the changing menu and we ordered one of each. Both tasted very good. Of course it would be great if they had more vegan choices, but apart from that, it is a great restaurant. We recommend booking a table because it is very popular. Visited in October 2022
Very friendly place was there with a non-vegan and we both got a lovely dinner. Lovely atmosphere very friendly staff. Unfortunately only one vegan option which makes it sort of difficult to return if your not in the mood for that one dish.

The food and staff are incredible. They actually ran out to a local store to get gluten-free pasta for my order. They have a gluten-free dessert (sticky toffee pudding), which is delightful. Highly recommend!

Beautiful surroundings and people were incredibly friendly, but the vegan curry was a little tasteless. Appropriate portion size and reasonable price $29 AUD).

We had dinner at Stonechat after spending the day in Killarney. I made a reservation in advance after reading the positive reviews on HappyCow because I am a vegan and my mother, who was with me, is gluten-free. Our waiter was wonderful, and came over to walk us through what was gluten-free in the menu. The menu has a vegetarian section with two clearly labeled Vegan options. I had stir fry vegetables cooked in sweet chilli sauce, sesame oil and soy sauce served with rice. The food was amazing: the sauce had kick without being overpowering and the veggies were seasoned and cooked perfectly. I also appreciated that they provided more veggies than rice because I 've often found that restaurants will give tons of rice with fewer veggies. I had a vegan-friendly apple pie for dessert, which was also outstanding. My mom had the salmon, which she loved. However, she was unable to have any of the dessert options, which was a downside, especially since I notified them of our dietary restrictions well in advance. All in all, it was a fantastic dining experience, and I would definitely recommend it to any vegans looking for dining options in Killarney.
To start, I had the house salad which was filled with lots of great vegetables! It was very tasty. For my entree, I had the mushroom stir-fry with tofu. The mushroom sauce was quite good. I really enjoyed this as an entree (huge fan of mushrooms) and it was such a great meal change from what I had been eating for 3 days. For a complete review, please see my blog here: [hidden link]
