Detour - Kaufman
Detour
Description
An endearingly old-school drive-in serves outstanding, richly decadent ice cream and well-built burgers that keep locals coming back, despite grease and occasionally sloppy assembly. Fries are frequently soggy and underseasoned, while sweet tea runs very sweet. Service is friendly but inconsistent — slow runs, order errors and one reported hygiene lapse mar the experience. The spot offers ample parking and a nostalgic, casual vibe; with tightened prep and order control it could be a genuine neighborhood gem.

The Detour with cheddar came with just a wilted piece of lettuce, a couple of slices of red onion, and it looked like it had been thrown together carelessly—quite a mess. The bottom bun was soaked in grease and what I assume was meat juice, making it nearly impossible to hold onto the burger, so I ended up discarding it along with the wilted lettuce. The second burger was also hastily assembled, but at least it didn't have a soggy bottom. Nonetheless, it was still very greasy. As for the float, it wasn’t impressive; it consisted of a small scoop of ice cream drowned in root beer. Overall, we’ve decided to skip this place in the future. There are better burgers just down the street, and it's really not that hard to make a good burger with nice presentation. There are too many other great options in town to consider coming back here.
Our burgers were good. Our fries were soggy. The ladies were nice. I decided I wanted ice cream after we ate. I knocked on the front window and looked inside. I saw a girl with a dark bob haircut scraping something out of a big silver bowl. She then went on to lick her fingers. I was so disgusted that I left. I will not be back.
The best burgers I've ever had! I would visit more often if I could, but I live two hours away.
This is not the modern drive-in experience they advertise. The only technology they have is a young lady with a wireless POS device running around. The only way to signal a carhop is by honking your horn, which isn't ideal. Sonic usually has a five-person crew, but when I visited, the three-person staff took 20 minutes to bring out a sweet tea that was loaded with so much sugar I felt like I'd develop diabetes by midnight. You could get the same food quality at a fast-food joint like Burger Box. I was really hoping for a memorable small-town experience, but it didn't happen. Perhaps their ice cream might be a redeeming factor, but I was so turned off by their lack of customer care that I won’t find out.
