Reviews summary
At Char in Jackson, MS, guests can expect a variable dining experience. While many rave about the outstanding service—highlighting attentive and friendly staff—the culinary offerings seem to be hit or miss. Patrons have enjoyed well-prepared ribeye steaks and praised their crab cakes, alongside sweet desserts like butter crunch cake and pecan pie. However, others have reported cold dishes and poor quality control, particularly during busy times. Despite inconsistent food experiences, the warm atmosphere and caring staff left many diners looking forward to their next visit. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak occasions.

When we visit Jackson, Chars is one of our favorite stops. Lunch in the bar area is what we enjoy. The food is very good and the service is great, attentive but not worrisome. Good food draws lots of folks, so get a reservation.
Everything from the time we walked in until we walked out the door was delightful. The wait staff were very attentive, the food was cooked to perfection and served in a timely fashion. We enjoyed our experience at Char tremendously!
Slow to be seated despite reservation. Very slow service. Food average at best for price, fish overcooked. Won’t be back anytime soon.
I recently dined at Char , and I must say, it was a delightful experience. The ambiance of the restaurant was inviting, making it a perfect spot for a nice meal. I ordered the Chicken Piccata, which was absolutely delicious. The flavors were well balanced, and it was cooked to perfection. The Wedge Salad was also impressive; it was fresh and crisp, complementing the main dish beautifully. I tried the Pork Chop, which was cooked well but a bit salty for my taste. It might be perfect for those who enjoy a stronger flavor profile. To top off the meal, I indulged in the Caramel Cheesecake. It was simply amazing—rich, creamy, and the caramel added a wonderful touch. Overall, I highly recommend Char for its great food and lovely atmosphere. I look forward to returning to try more dishes!

Update 2/4/25- Nick Ulmer the GM got in touch and he absolutely went above and beyond to make this right! We will definitely be back. Thanks again, Nick. Char use to always be 5 star service, going above and beyond with attention to all details. Now the quality of service has gone down hill for dinner. Service is similar to Applebees. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner

My family and I had an awesome time at Char in Jackson,MS! The ribeye steaks were cooked to perfection by.Ross, and I mean melt in your mouth delicious. The server, Roderick, was an absolute angel, THE BEST server Attentive, patient, friendly, just on point. Can’t wait to go back again soon
The service was great. I sat at the bar and the bartender was super nice and seemed really happy to be there. The food on the other hand was not that good. I started with their “award winning” gumbo which was cold. I’m guessing they added cold white rice to the warm gumbo which made the entire dish cold. I also ordered the crab cakes and the mushroom and asparagus gratin. The crab cakes were just OK and the au gratin was inedible; and it wasn’t even close to au gratin. It was basically a goopy, cream sauce served with mushroom stems, three pieces of raw asparagus and uncooked yellow onion. The onion was extremely pungent and the fact that it was raw made it hard to eat. I liked the place, loved the server, and really didn’t like the food. It’s too bad.
Wonderful environment! Service was excellent! The food was delicious! You have to try the house made pecan pie ! Overall great experience!
During my time in Mississippi, I really enjoyed Char. However, on a recent visit home, I experienced terrible service. I only ended up with an appetizer. I ordered the crab cake, but it lacked flavor. Additionally, I tried the fried green tomatoes, which were served cold, so I sent them back. After that, I just didn’t feel like ordering an entrée. My friend ordered the chopped steak and chose dressing as one of her sides, but the dressing was watery, and she sent it back as well. We spoke to the manager about the poor service, but all he did was remove the fried green tomatoes from the bill since they weren’t eaten, which was the least he could do.

My husband and I ate at Char last night for an early Father's Day dinner. From the time we got there till the time we left, everyone was super nice and helpful. Austin was our waiter and he was super friendly and helpful as well. The food was outstanding, absolutely delicious. We will definitely be back!
The service at Char was fantastic; however, the food left much to be desired. The bread and wedge salad were delightful, but the steak lacked any char or seasoning, and the fish did not meet the expectations set by the menu. There was hardly any sauce or crab meat, making it feel like a $40 meal wasn't worth it.
First time to dine at Char. I enjoyed the excellent food, the presentation of the food, the way the food was flavored, and the generally pleasant decor and atmosphere of the place. My wife and I had a very pleasant time.
We celebrated Father's Day. We had reservations. we waited 1.5 hours for our meals, two steaks. They were luke warm once received them. I expected fresh off the grill sizzling steak for such a long wait. We eat ar Char often for special occasions. This experience was not up to par.
Our group of four enjoyed brunch at Char on Sunday. We started with crab claws, Mimosas, and Bloody Marys while awaiting our main courses. Two members of our group ordered the Eggs Benedict special, while another had the chopped steak with potatoes and vegetables, and the last person opted for a wedge salad. The food was exceptional across the board. Jake provided excellent service throughout our meal! Char is a fantastic and reliable destination for fine dining in Jackson. Thank you!

Great short rib on Tuesday. The creamed spinach is also very good. Very attentive service. One of the better restraunt in Jackson. Def should give this restraunt a try
I visited the restaurant with my sister, and we had a wonderful experience! The food was outstanding, and the lemontinis were amazing! Having Tommy play the piano truly enhanced our evening. Our server was fantastic—though I regret that I didn’t catch her name. I really appreciate waitstaff who respect your space and don’t interrupt your conversation excessively, unlike at some other seafood places. Her timing was spot-on, and my steak was cooked to perfection!
The fried chicken served on the blue plate is the finest in Jackson! I adore the flavor, and impressively, it’s not greasy at all—so tasty! Don’t miss out on the spinach crisps, steaks, and burgers either. The mimosas are made with freshly squeezed orange juice, which is a lovely addition. The service is outstanding, and the food is amazing!
I have to say Char is my favorite place to come to at the end of the day. Best place for me to just relax and try and free my mind from everything in this chaotic world. And the shrimp bisque? Excellent.

Went for the first time on a date and I throughly enjoyed the food and the service. Everything was top notch!! Will certainly be visiting again!!
We visited this restaurant for the first time last night. My dad and I were looking for a nice dinner, and Char did not let us down! The fried green tomatoes were just okay, but the redfish with broccoli was fantastic. The pecan pie with vanilla really stole the spotlight. We’ll definitely be returning soon. While the overall prices are on the higher side, I enjoyed the restaurant and the food, so I wouldn’t mind the cost. I can’t believe we hadn’t tried Char sooner!
All the dishes I tried were great, with one exception: the grits in garlic sauce. After tasting them, I was surprised that they are still on the menu. I would suggest skipping that dish, as none of us enjoyed it. But, to each their own—someone must be ordering it! Aside from that, everything else was good. The server was friendly, and the food was well-prepared.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a large table available so quickly on a summer Saturday. I have a few friends who know what "Pull up at Char" means, and I couldn't help but smile.
It's been almost ten years since my last visit to this restaurant, and I'm happy to report that it remains excellent! The food was exceptional in every way...

Service was slow. The waiter did not get one of the members in our party order right. The food has always been good, but the last couple of times I’ve dined at Char staff attentiveness has been lacking.
Excellent atmosphere, service and food to die for. Char is the world's most perfect restaurant.
Our server, Darwin, was exceptional! He quickly took our orders and provided excellent recommendations for the dish my wife chose. He made sure our glasses were always full and excelled in every way.
The food was outstanding, and the service was exceptional! We received perfect attention and thoroughly enjoyed every moment!
