Sedap - Islington
Sedap
Description
Sedap, a family-run Malaysian restaurant on Old Street, offers a delightful introduction to Nyonya cuisine, characterized by its blend of Malay and Chinese influences. While the atmosphere leans towards upscale, the service has faced criticism for inconsistency. Diners have noted variations in portion sizes, with some dishes, like the acclaimed Char Kway Teow, delivering great flavor but leaving cravings unsatisfied. Despite minor service hiccups, the authentic flavors and thoughtful preparation of dishes evoke a sense of home for those yearning for true Malaysian fare. Sedap is a must-visit for food enthusiasts seeking genuine Nyonya delights.

During our most recent visit, the restaurant was slightly less crowded than before. We were seated at a table for two in the front room and focused on exploring the menu.
Forward, it was not a good time. I am downhill. used to love it and was there many times that eating is in the regular ok! the service is terrible. my daughter ordered pineapple juice that was turned off, how bad they can't drink it, we gave it back. at the end when I paid, I informed the dame and she said we accept no returns when they order it, it is shocking! it wasn't a big thing as the juice cost 2 pounds, as I already paid, I wanted to leave anyway, but her answer was just wrong. the plates were cold! I ordered the singapur laksa, they were very close to the ingredients literally 1 prawn, tiny chicken, and above all a big bowl of noodles with spicy coconut...read more
My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant for dinner on a busy Tuesday night. The atmosphere was more upscale than a casual café, but the wait time did not correspond to the portion sizes. While the food was decent, it was definitely overpriced considering the atmosphere, service, and portion sizes. The restaurant could benefit from improving their positioning.
This Malaysian restaurant, Sedap, is moderately priced and located in a plain shop. However, as we sat down, we noticed some interesting Nyonya tableware. Nyonya cuisine is a blend of Malay and Chinese cultures, originating in Malacca and now popular along the coast from Penang to Singapore. "Sedap" means delicious in Malay, so we had high expectations. The service, led by one of the owners from Penang, was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We tried a few traditional dishes to evaluate the quality and authenticity of the cooking.
