Lovely setting in the original kitchen of the Hall (there is also a courtyard but not warm enough to eat outside when we visited). We had an excellent meal with charming service. Well worth combining with a visit to the Hall. It's within the grounds so you have to pay to get into the estate anyway but it's very interesting to visit the house and estate. There is also a Tea Room, but the Old Kitchen restaurant is a di... View all feedback.
What taniao552 doesn't like about The At Houghton Hall:
I visited this restaurant for the first time two years ago and loved it, especially the low prices in the tea shop. Unfortunately, I missed visiting last year. When I returned on Thursday, I was horrified by the price hike, especially for the cafetiere that only goes down two-thirds of the way because it is deeper on the outside - what a scam! I will continue to visit the gardens, but I will not be returning to the t... View all feedback.
We had a very good, healthy and tasty lunch (Puy lentils, roasted beetroot, walnuts, watercress, and mixed leaves). The young man serving us was excellent. He asked us which options were available at each stage when serving the meals. Very clear and helpful. When at the till there wasn't room on the tray for the tea, so the lady at the till helpfully brought the tea over to our table and moved a chair so I could get to the table in my wheelchair. A lovely healthy meal at a very reasonable cost with service that was prompt and helpful.
Visited for the first time 2 years ago, loved it surprised by the liw price in the tea shop. Missed last year , visited Thursday horrified by the price hike the cafetiere that only goes down 2\3 of the way because it's deeper on the outside! What a con! Will continue to visit fardens but not the t shop!
We ate lunch in the Stables restaurant at Houghton Hall. It's a pleasant place but it was crowded The mushroom soup and bread roll were very good. There was an over-sweet coffee and walnut cake. The staff were very pleasant.
After an initial lack of communication from Houghton, I finally managed to talk to someone and informed them that I am Coeliac, for when we were visiting, etc. After that, everything was perfectly ok. When we arrived at the restaurant I made myself known to the staff as requested, (after being told to 'sit down, the waitress will come to you ' and my delicious chicken dinner was brought to me. A tad heavy on what I believe was tarragon, but otherwise ok. The staff were pleasant ,courteous and patient on what was a very busy service.
We eat in the cafe (where only cold food is served and sat outside in the courtyard. When we asked to see a menu were told to 'sit at a table and we will bring you one ' but why dont they display one outside so that you can see what 's on offer? Are they afraid that people will read it and walk away (not too many other places to walk away to once you are there! . The Cromer crab salad was poor value at £12.50, although my cheese sandwich was fine. The staff need a bit more organisation and they should pay more attention to the food people leave behind and ask themselves why.
