Tried a new place tonight on the recommendation of a friend, and it didn't disappoint! If you know me, you know I don't like salmon, but I thought it interesting to find salmon on the menu at a Korean restaurant. Since I love Korean food, I thought I'd give it a chance figuring I'd trade for my Mom's Bi Bim Bap if I didn't care for it. Well, it was outstanding! I couldn't even tell it was salmon. I can't remember exactly how it was garnished other than it had seaweed and panko, but it's a definite must try! And then, check out our tiramisu in a 4 ceramic pot made to look like a plant! Oh, and I can't forget the truffle mandoo with daikon and shoyu gel. Wow! That dish was broke da mouth! This place was phenomenal!
The food at OKims is incredible, and the outdoor patio seating is adorable, complemented by quick and attentive service! Located in Chinatown, this hidden gem specializes in Korean fusion cuisine. They offer monthly specials, but you absolutely must try the pork belly brulee and the truffle gyoza! The gyoza is delicious, served with cubes of ponzu sauce—it's such a delightful twist to use ube instead of traditional dipping sauce. The Korean fried chicken has a nice spiciness to it, though it wasn't quite what I expected. Still, it's very satisfying and generous in portion. However, the standout dish has to be the pork belly brulee! It's crispy on the outside and incredibly flavorful. I will definitely order this every time! For dessert, don't miss the corn ice cream—it's mostly ice cream with bits of corn, and it's exceptional! The pink powder adds a nice touch. I love everything about this place and can’t wait to return!
Cyndy 's Bottom Line: Food well executed*Walk ins welcomed*Reservations on RESY*Credit cards accepted*Inside and outside patio dining area*Street parking or garage parking.*Online ordering and take out available*Casual ambianceThis is what we ate/drank:*Yuzu lemonade -Refeshingly tart, citrus blend.*Korean Old Lady Iced Coffee-I had to ask about this coffee because of the name and the nice, friendly server gave me a taste. It was the right amount of sugar to coffee. Nice and sweet. *TRUFFLE MANDOO -four different kinds of mushrooms, zucchini, mushroom paste.-The mandoo wrapper is delicate and perfectly fried with a thin layer of crispy goodness. The mushrooms are so scrumptious with an earthy, savory flavor and soft spongy texture. The mushroom paste heightens the flavor with each bite. A must order.*SEAWEED SALMON -Slightly poached salmon topped with panko and seaweed powder, Korean remoulade, tosazu gelee, pickled tomato, purple rice, green salad and kimchi-The flavor profiles are so robust in this dish from the seaweed powder, remoulade and the tosazugelee which works perfectly with the poached salmon. The kimchi is just the right amount of sour, spicy, and saltiness. Enjoyed the texture and taste of the purple rice. The salad was nicely dressed with a subtle flavored dressing. A must orde if you like salmon and umami flavors.*Basque cheesecake -This is the best Basque cheesecake out of San Sebastián, Spain. A Basque cheesecake typically has a rich creamy center and a deeply caramelized burnt top and bottom. O 'Kim 's replicates it so well! It is divine!Highly recommend Friendly attentive service
Cozy Korean dining in Honolulu's Chinatown. Seating is limited so you may need to be patient but your patience will be rewarded. We had the bibimbap with spicy chicken, the Korean chicken, the kalbi beef, and the lasagna. The bibimbap was fresh and brightwith tender spicy chicken and savory mushrooms, tender greens, and crunchy bean sprouts. Fried to perfect, the Korean chicken issweet and spicy with potato croquettes and red rice. Melt in your mouth tender and savory is the best way to describe the kalbibeef and it came with fried pumpkin and potatoes with rice. Finally, the lasagna was filled with kalbi beef and cheese it wasdefinitely good but a little heavy and could have benefitted from some greens to add volume and freshness. We sat on the cuteback patio and it was a nice relaxed and delicious lunch.
The restaurant looks unassuming but it is definitely a gem. The store front looks like it has very limited seating but they will take you back to a cute patio lit with string lights for a nice ambience. The menu constantly changes with interesting optionsand lots of plant based vegan dishes which are clearly marked and helps people in making their choices. All the food wereinnovative and fun, we had the vegan mandoo and it came with a cubed soy sauce hello which elevated our dining experience. Allthe dishes were well plated and tasted even more amazing. I had black fish and chips, it was so yummy I forgot to take apicture, and I take pictures of everything!
