Kabuki - Honolulu

Lately, Kabuki Kapiolani Restaurant has been my family's place of celebrations. We've celebrated birthdays, christmases, family visiting from the mainland or just family gatherings. Its nothing fancy...just a little hole in the wall kinda'place. The moment you walk in, you'll know that its a Japanese restaurant because of their furniture and the decor. The staff here is very friendly and welcoming. Whenever we call to make reservations or change our reservations, they are very accommodating. Also, if you would like to bring in a cake for a special celebration, they are more than happy to store it for you in their refrigerator. Now, let's get down to the grub! KKR has a large variety of dishes. They have teishoku combination plates, a variety of noodle dishes, handmade sushi rolls/bowls and many other Japanese dishes. In addition to the menu items, you can order from their special menus that changes periodically. My family usually order the teishoku combination plates because the value and portions are a good deal. The food is very tasty as well. So, if you are in the mood for some home cooked Japanese dishes, head on over to KKR. You'll thank me for that!

We are here last night from an invitation from some new Hawaii friends. Walking in this place looks really run down and hasn't been updated in the last at least few decades complete with Christmas lights with cobwebs and a dead Christmas wreath hanging on the wall. Unless this is a joke and a play on the movie 8 crazy night and the run down restaurant in there named China Dragon. So if this is it then HaHa! But I can guarantee not...with a city so full of great Japanese and Chinese restaurants this place clearly lost its once known luster. Even the service was not great either. My food and my wife's was probably the worst teriyaki plate I have ever had. The beef was chewy and gummy and even the chicken lacked great flavor. My wife's sushi platter was so skimpy and the pieces of nigiri were almost funny the rice and lack of fish comparison. So the company was great but the food lack luster at best. Based on its location this place probably gets lots of lunch rush being downtown and truly lucks its way through each day. Too bad because this was a total disappointment...

Today 04/18/21 is the last day for the Kabuki restaurant on Kapiolani. I haven't heard any media announcement that they were closing but it's better for their loyal customers to order their last favorites before closing without having to wait in a long line. I work in town but I haven't dined in as much. Just lately, I've been ordering a lot of take out orders, since their Instagram announcement awhile back mentioned their April closing. Their reasonably priced lunch bentos (under $10 and ahi tempura were yummy. I did tried their oxtail soup with tempura combo. There were about 6-7 pieces of oxtail, two big daikon pieces and rice. I loved the ginger and green onion taste in the delicious broth and I got all vegetable tempura. Food was good. Friend said there are not too many places which serve some dishes like Chicken tofu and some other favorites. Today is the last day to get your fix. I will miss the good cucumber tsukemono but since i heard it wasn't made in-house, so I will look for it in the stores. The Kabuki restaurant in Waimalu will remain open, since the restaurant is under a different ownership. Some of specials offered here is a little different from the Waimalu location. Best to call your order in advance if you can get through since it may be only Pauline or another lady answering the phone calls as well as taking in the payments. Parking is in front in the marked stalls as you enter from the King Street They will be opened today for lunch and dinner til 8pm. (Don't wait to the end . They are closed between lunch and dinner. No early bird specials since there is no dine-in. Check to see what's available but they do have specials on the menu board beside the regular menu. The lunch bentos can be ordered at dinner except for the two bentos that need to be ordered a day in advance. Aloha and thank you everyone at Kabuki and Pauline who has been taking my order in the past month. Thank you for for staying in business for many years since 1984 and unfortunately this covid pandemic didn't help with the slow business all the added cost of staying in business to open for dine-in. It has been two years since I last visited this restaurant with a friend. My coworker recently ordered lunch for our team to celebrate their birthday, and we ordered a total of seven bento boxes. My bento included teriyaki beef, fried chicken, saba, and gobo with rice. The beef was tender, the saba was fresh, and the chicken was not too oily. The price of the bento boxes was very reasonable.

Working across the street, there 's not much options without having to go on adventure...so I LOVE the fact that Kabuki is so close to me! What I love about them? Fast Great food Value Great customer service I don 't have a lot of time during lunch, so I love that I can order ahead and pick up bentos. When things were normal , you would get your food in a timely manner. Everything they serve tastes delicious. I always order a bento that has salmon. Each time, it 's perfectly cooked! Nothing is overcooked or dry! I have been meaning to try their sushi...Bumbai! The value for the food you get is worth it. Their bentos and overall pricing is fair. There 's so many Japanese restaurants that overcharge on everything..Kabuki isn 't one of them. Finally, customer service is always great. The staff is always friendly. Support local and grab a quick lunch when in the area or pick up dinner!
