Dagon - Honolulu
Dagon
Description
Dagon offers a vibrant atmosphere and a diverse menu featuring flavorful dishes that often charm food enthusiasts. While many diners praise the authenticity and quality of the menu, consistent complaints about slow service mar the overall experience. Patrons have reported long waits for dishes and confusion with orders, suggesting staffing issues in the kitchen. Despite these challenges, some guests remain loyal, drawn by satisfying favorites like tea leaf salad and biryani. With potential for excellence, Dagon's culinary offerings shine, but the restaurant must address service inconsistencies to fully impress its loyal clientele.

This was my first visit to the restaurant and I was eager to try it after it was recommended by my friends. The food was mediocre at best. The server suggested we order the pineapple to go with one of our dishes, but it ended up being $16 when the bill came. The food was overpriced and the service was terrible. When we tried to engage in conversation with our server about her accent, she rudely ignored us and eventually said she wouldn't discuss it. It was a very strange experience and definitely not worth the price. We will not be returning.
Nice feel, cool atmosphere, and the food that actually made it to the table was pretty good. My complaint is that timeliness and honesty was lacking. There was clearly an issue in the back but everyone just pretended nothing was wrong. I understand everyone is understaffed but at a certain point you should tell people what's up or maybe stop taking orders. Our experience and frustration was evidently shared by everyone else dining in and coming for take out. In summary: First dish was brought out 45 minutes after we arrived. Over the next 45 minutes, we had a few more plates come out. The side rice for the curry and the palata never made it out. Mysteriously the salad took over an hour. After having been there for nearly two hours, we asked for the check and they were kind enough to remove the items that never made it to the table.
This place is confusing. The food is really good but the kitchen apparently can't keep up with 2 tables, not to mention the steady stream of similarly bewildered people there for takeout. We arrived and were seated at 515pm, the first dish came around 615 and an entire meal and side for another never came after 1h 30m, we cancelled the missing items.
I'm not sure if this restaurant represents all Burmese cuisine, but if it does, it has become my new favorite spot. As vegetarians, we found every dish to be outstanding. The hostess was incredibly kind and welcoming, accommodating us even though the table was soon reserved. If I lived nearby, I would definitely be a regular here. The prices also offer excellent value given the quality of the food.
This was my first experience with Burmese cuisine, so I wasn't sure how authentic it would be, but everything we tried was delicious. My wife loves Burmese food after her trip to Myanmar, so we had to give it a shot. The flavors are a delightful blend of Indian, Chinese, and Thai influences. We started with the tea leaf salad, which was incredibly refreshing. I ordered the garlic noodles, which were very much inspired by Thai cuisine and absolutely tasty, while my wife had the lamb potato curry served with jasmine rice, showcasing various Indian influences. We also tried the Burmese tofu on the side, which resembled delicious chickpea fries. Overall, the meal was fantastic, and the service was exceptional. We would definitely return when we're in Honolulu again.
