I really love this place! The burritos are fantastic. I always make an effort to come here when I can. The staff may not seem friendly at first, but once you start chatting with them, they turn out to be very nice. View all feedback.
What Lisa S doesn't like about La Mexicana:
Based on previous reviews, this place used to be a fantastic market, but my recent visit a few days ago left much to be desired. I was hoping to find some pan dulce, but there was only a small cabinet for baked goods. When I opened it to take a closer look, I was met with several little fruit flies — absolutely disgusting! The store was dimly lit and appeared quite run-down. To top it off, I was the only customer the... View all feedback.
This one star is only for their take out food. NASTY! I couldnt believe it. I had 2 chile rellenos with rice beans and a chicken tamal pork tamal for later. It ALL was a big disappointment. The sauce was so salty and the rellenos were canned and vinegar tasting. I couldn't find the cheese and it tasted as if they wrapped a thin scrambled egg around it. The beans tasted canned also. Really? The tamales were inedible with the masa being hard and dark in color and the meat so dry. They do have some of the best masa preparada for making tamales and I also enjoy their corn tortillas for their simple ingredients and no persevatives. Stay away from their take out menu. You have been warned! I sure hope they read my review. Would hope for them to want to improve.
I usually just get chicken tamales soaking in mole' sauce sprinkled with cheese when I go here. Everyone is always so nice and friendly. It is like a small verity store. They have a lot going on in this store. They sale jewelry, they're also like a grocery market, plus they have a kitchen where they make delicious food from. Well I've have only had their tamales but I believe their other items may be tasty. I gave them the 4 stars because as I mentioned, there is too much going on in the store which can be confusing to someone who is visiting for the first time. Maybe next time I'll venture out and get a burrito or enchilada just to try something new.
This restaurant has really changed! We used to love getting our tamales from here, but after my experience today, I’m not sure I’ll return. I purchased some for a group outing, and they were awful—extremely dry, and the masa had a strange aftertaste. If I had just bought them for myself, I could have overlooked it, but since I bought two dozen for the group, I felt terrible serving them such a disappointing meal. The only positive aspect was how quickly they were prepared. Maybe I got yesterday's batch? Either way, I won’t be coming back!
I picked up 5 dozen corn tortillas here for less than $5. They're freshly made with no preservatives and taste fantastic. It's an incredible deal compared to the price and quality I usually find at a regular grocery store.
I wouldn't even want to give this place one star. La Mexicana used to be my go-to spot for pork tamales, but not anymore. I bought a dozen, and they were dry and sour. It feels like someone who knew what they were doing must have left the team. With so much competition out there, La Mexicana really needs to improve and come back strong.
