Description

This pub offers a lively, relaxed vibe with a solid beer selection, casual bar games and modest outdoor seating. Friendly, attentive staff and reliable catering are highlights, but an underwhelming refurbishment, sparse furnishings and inconsistent kitchen performance — slow service, occasionally cold or salty dishes — hold it back. Popular with families, groups and sports fans, it has potential given its wide catchment and nearby development, yet needs smarter décor and better sound-damping to fulfill that promise.

--- This pub has a lively atmosphere, offering a selection of beers and food. However, McMullen's recent refurbishment feels underwhelming compared to their other establishments—a missed opportunity, given that it's the only pub serving a large part of the town. The renovations lack creativity; a few more decorative elements and some soft furnishings could help dampen the noise, as the sound of a single loud group can make it difficult to have a conversation while dining or enjoying a drink. The food is decent, but I found many dishes to be quite salty. For example, I waited nearly an hour for my fish and chips a few weeks ago, even with few patrons in the pub. It was enjoyable when it finally arrived, but the wait was frustrating. On another occasion, my burger was served missing half its patty, which I had to send back to have the rest added. Considering the prices, I expected a better quality experience. Despite its potential, the pub often feels relatively empty, even with its large catchment area. Smaller pubs in other parts of town seem to attract more customers, likely due to stronger competition. This venue could thrive, especially with new flats being developed nearby, but McMullen's needs to invest in it as they do with their other pubs. The interiors here are lacking in comparison to many of their other locations across Hertfordshire and beyond; you'd hardly guess they are part of the same chain. On a positive note, the staff are consistently friendly and attentive—the bar staff and manager are true assets to the company. I genuinely hope this pub can reach its full potential in the coming years so that those of us living nearby don’t have to go elsewhere for a pleasant night out.

The food options were somewhat limited, particularly for vegetarians, but what was available was quite enjoyable.

Amazing pub! The atmosphere is fantastic, and the staff is super friendly. They also offer excellent gluten-free options!

Our entire family gathered for a fantastic meal, and we thoroughly enjoyed the enormous Yorkshire puddings. We will definitely be back soon. Thank you for an excellent experience!
