The mushroom pizza was also delicious. There are many vegetarian and vegan options available, and the staff is friendly. The prices are reasonable. Additionally, there is a children's playground with spacious picnic benches next door, which made for a very relaxing meal. This review was last updated on March 4th, 2022. View all feedback.

I had high expectations after reading the reviews here and in the NZ Lonely Planet. However, I was disappointed to find that the eggplant dish (baingan bharta) was oily and acidic. The rice was served in a large glass pot straight from the microwave. The poppadoms were burnt and didn't taste as good as the expensive mango chutney. Had high hopes after the reviews on here and the shout out in the NZ Lonely Planet. Sadly the food was a let down oily and sour tasting egg plant dish (baingan bharta). The rice came in a big glass pot right out of the microwave. The poppadoms were burnt and unfortunately didn't taste great, just like the overpriced little pot of mango chutney. My omni companion had a chicken curry which he liked, but his naan looked and tasted like an over baked and crispy store bought naan.
The mushroom do payaza was also great. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options, friendly staff, good prices. There's a children's playpark with big picnic benches next door, which made for an unusually relaxing meal! Updated from previous review on 2022-03-04
Hanmer was pretty busy but there was no one else in this restaurant when I arrived for lunch. I had the $15 lunch special the menu clearly states dairy free options and to ask the server about vegan options. I had the dal makhani with rice and roti (instead of naan to keep it dairy free). Food arrived quickly and was tasty, with enough left over to take home for dinner.
They had clear vegan options which were amazing! Staff and service were really awesome too.
I have tried a lot of Indian food and this restaurant definitely serves some of the best. The dishes are authentic, generous, and reasonably priced. The service is friendly and goes above and beyond. I highly recommend this place with a 10/10 rating. Dining in for dinner costs around NZ$30-40 per person. I suggest trying the Naan, Vegetable Korma, Chicken Biryani, and Chicken Tikka.
