The Bridge Inn Topsham - Exeter
The Bridge Inn Topsham
Description
The Malt House is a lovingly preserved old-world pub serving expertly kept real ales from a stillage, simple yet excellent food and seasonal riverside seating. Cozy log fires, an intimate music room and charming staff create a warm, timeless atmosphere praised by CAMRA and even visited by royalty. Expect a short, high-quality menu (the vegan pasty gets rave mentions), affordable prices and family-friendly portions; parking is available but winter access can be tricky, and summer evenings can be busy in the beer garden.

A true, classic old-world pub that serves excellent real ales from a stillage—a rarity these days. The lunch menu is simple yet delightful, and based on reputation, the vegan pasty is reportedly better than the meat option! There is parking available, although winter access might be tricky for some. However, in the summer, it's lovely to sit by the Clyst with a well-poured beer in hand. Price per person: £10–20. Food: 4, Service: 5, Atmosphere: 5.
Incredible traditional pub without a bar. The beer is outstanding, served directly from the cask in the cellar. Price range per person: £1–10. Service: 5/5. Atmosphere: 5/5.
This is a classic pub that serves excellent beer. It offers a cozy atmosphere reminiscent of traditional drinking spots and has a rich history that dates back to the time of Oliver Cromwell. Price per person: £10–20. Food: 4/5. Service: 4/5. Atmosphere: 4/5.
This is a fantastic traditional pub, easily the best I've found in Topsham. However, the layout can be a bit awkward and cramped; I nearly walked into one of the restricted areas myself! Fortunately, the other patrons were very accommodating and made space for newcomers at their tables. There are no beer pumps here; instead, the beer is served directly from barrels in a side room. The bartender was extremely friendly, especially when I accidentally wandered behind the bar. After I properly returned to the right side of the counter, I ordered a beer called Summa That from Branscombe Brewery. This pub is enjoyable any time of year, but it must be even better in the summer when you can enjoy your drink outside. The building itself dates back to the 16th century, and it has been operated by the same family since the late 19th century.
This pub has a classic, traditional feel, featuring an open fireplace and still offering Ploughman’s on the menu. There’s seating that provides a charming view of the River Clyst, which is beautiful in both summer and winter. The pub comes highly recommended by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and has even received a royal seal of approval, having been visited by the Queen in the late 1990s.
