Visited Red Squirrel last night for a catch up with some old colleagues. Pleasant enough atmosphere, a drinks menu that afforded plenty of choice, and potentially one of the best burgers I 've ever eaten... However, for one of the waitresses to snap can I just take your order, I 've got other things to be doing whilst a couple of us were merely pondering our options was downright despicable quite honestly tainted the whole experience. You 've got a good thing going, but that one waitress clearly doesn 't value your customers that will prove fatal in the long term. Polite service is the bare minimum parties like ourselves should have received. Would think twice before returning simply due to the absence of such.
Stopped in for dinner two days ago, quickly got a wonderful seat by the window, but that’s when the experience went downhill. Waitress took our order, we specifically ordered starters and she asked us if we would like these to come out first as appetizers to which we said yes. We waited 25 minutes until our actual meal arrived after which she informed us she made a mistake and the appetizers were coming after the main meal was on the table. I asked her to cancel them as we sat there hungry for 25 minutes, but she said they were prepared, i.e. a bowl of soup and a plate of bread. The service is really poor, no one comes to check on you, had to flag down several people to bring us ketchup, salt, water, and utensils. Had to flag down somebody else to order a dessert that was ordered for three of us, and they brought one spoon. Good luck, finding somebody else to help with more spoons. Finally a good waitress arrived, got us our check come and we left. Perhaps this is a good place for drinks only, would not recommend for food as a service really sour the whole experience. We were craving burgers and loved the ones at Red Squirrel. They had great chicken and veggie burgers which were HUGE! They catered to our food allergy needs and the ambience was great. Fantastic cocktails, as well. Price per person: £10–20 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4
I've been to Red Squirrel about ten times, and they’ve never let me down, so I owe them a review. The food is always delicious; go for the Red Squirrel Burger, it’s consistently perfect. What I love most about this place is that even though it’s right in the centre of Edinburgh and attracts tourists, it doesn’t feel like a typical tourist spot. They have an amazing selection of drinks , everything from local IPAs and porters to proper craft Scottish lagers. That, along with the great food, is what keeps me coming back. 5 stars.
