Mixed reviews: O'Oliviero earns praise for pizza and carbonara and friendly staff, but some guests report slow service, variable seasoning and tight seating.
Lovely meal but Hostess needs to be less rude. Felt a but unwelcome. Our server was good though and the food as well. I can definitely see other people walking out because of her
Menu was generic and actual menus filthy so obvs never changed. Room was full of boxes! So ambience compromised. Food average and not remarkable.
Staying in Edinburgh for a few days with family, had booked this Italian restaurant a few days in advance as it looked nice online and seemed to have a good menu. Went today for the evening meal and was greeted by being told to wait outside for over 10 minutes while they sorted the table which we had already booked days in advance. Had to stand far away from the restaurant and wait to be told to come in as the entrance was so narrow and had waiters walking in and out every minute, once we were eventually Invited in we were shown to a really small and crammed booth table with the whine restaurant having massively outdated decor and was really crammed with all the tables close together. Was politely offered drinks and menus which we ordered starters at the same time as mains. Drinks were massively overpriced as well as food. Waited over an hour for the starters to come and when we finally got given food the waiter brought our mains. We asked why we had not been given starters but was told that he was unsure, but he could go and ask and asked if it was s okay to leave the mains there. Was advised him that we wanted the starters first and then the mains, as you do normally going for a meal but his only response was we would just have to wait another hour for the food to be fresh again. After asking to speak to the manager we were just told that we would be tell the same thing as what he said. We just decided to scarp the started and just eat the mains that were brought out, which were cold when they were brought out anyway. The food was not worth the price and portions were tiny. My mum ordered a seafood pasta in which they had just placed cooked seafood as it was caught on her plate with no instruction as how to eat it or pull it apart. Overall terrible experience, service was shocking and food was awful for the price we paid.

O'Oliviero operates within one of Grassmarket's historic facades, and that compact footprint explains the snug booths and narrow doorway — a trade-off many diners accept for the central Old Town location. Regulars have quietly learned to order quicker-to-serve items (pizzas or certain house pastas) at peak times to avoid waits, and staff are often happy to advise which dishes are quickest if you're on a schedule.
