So we came by here after a nice early morning climb up Calton Hill and we were in need of some breakfast. We were seated immediately but I was not impressed by the table we had as it was dirty, appeared not to have been cleaned properly as there were still crumbs on it. We were given menus but it was a good 20minutes before the waitress came up to serve us and I was pretty frustrated and ready to leave and find something else at that point. Waitress noticed the dirty table and cleaned it as she brought out breakfast stuff out. The breakfast itself, was fine I suppose but service left a lot to be desired.
I came across this restaurant after a leisurely shopping trip at St James Center and was pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent and the restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere. I decided to try something out of my comfort zone and ordered the Haggis Ravioli, which turned out to be absolutely delicious. The traditional whiskey cream sauce complemented the dish perfectly. The pizza pasta was also amazing, but the real highlight was the dessert. The Torta di Mele, Panna Cota, and Tiramisu were all incredibly delicious and have set the bar high for future desserts. I will continue to search until I find something that can compare to the amazing taste and textures I experienced at Martone!
I can only comment on the dessert, but it was amazing. I ordered the After Eight, which included vanilla and mint chocolate chip ice creams with crème de menthe, mint crunch, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream on top. The dessert was delicious. The restaurant was busy when we arrived around 10 pm, probably because of desserts like this one.
FOOD Came during a non-busy time. Food was nice. Portions were a good size, enough to fill you up. Wait time for food was not bad. A lot of people were coming in for just the gelato, I didn't try. VIBE Being right next to a hotel and a short distance to Calton Hill, I worried it was going to be very tourist targeted with not so great food. Instead, it did feel very cozy and family-run with good quality food. Very relaxed and casual, especially the staff. STAFF Friendly but lazy. Despite it being a non-busy time, it was consistently hard to get any servers' attention.
We stopped here back in June 2019, but our memories lingered on like it was yesterday! This place was right around the corner, maybe a block 's away from our hotel, we decided to stop here for dinner. For dinner we have shared the Minestrone Toscano Soup handmade with beans, vegetables barley. I had the Filet of Sea Bass, pan fried with lemon white wine sauce, served with potatoes vegetables. Hubby had Filet steak strip on a wrap, with tomatoes red onions wholegrain mustard. Again, we each had half half, and they were excellent! Knickerbocker Glory (see photo): Peach Amaretti, vanilla strawberry ice creams, amaretti biscuits, mixed fruit, strawberry sauce, finished with whipped cream. I wanted the child portion, because I just want to taste what an 'Award Winning Ice Cream ' tasted like, but they don 't give child size to adults, 'it 's too little ', but it 's like shoving that in YOUR FACE, without first asking us, but with the both of us, we finished it it was delish! Our table was upstairs, it was crowded, the restroom is back downstairs.
