Bing’s Eatery - East Hants

It was surprising to discover a restaurant like this in such a remote location, but unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations tonight. The menu was unique and visually appealing.

We had dinner at Bing's Eatery, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Within walking distance of our inn, Bing's came recommended. Our meals were very good, imaginatively prepared, and well presented. The walls are decorated with artwork, and there are fresh flowers on the tables. Food is prepared with locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. Our waiter (one of the owners) was very pleasant and attentive. There are a few minor misses - such as cheap paper napkins; however, the overall experience was quite positive.

We had been camping around the Maritimes for a couple of weeks and on this, our last full day there, we were heading up to Burntcoat from a Shubenacadie Powwow and needed to stop for an early dinner. We were traveling with a couple of octogenarians who are used to early dinner times and since we were in a time zone four hours later than our own, it worked out to have Linner, or our big meal in the late afternoon. Being that early meant there was only one other party so we were seated right away despite dropping in. Two hours later that would not have been true; the place filled up. First, let me tell you about the physical space. It was lovely with all the dark wood, brightly colored original art including a little ante room that was a gallery including paintings, drawings, photography and pottery, and the sun streaming in the windows on the warm polished wood. Most of the tables were old vintage or antique numbers and the two larger ones looked like they'd'a been at home in the Green Gables kitchen. Each with different very simple yet striking flower arrangements. Ours were bright red tall spikes of glads in a glass bottle, pinging off the bright red in the paintings. So, okay, the space was like any high end foodie paradise. Second, the service was just one young hipster fellow but he was informed and attentive even after the place filled up. Third and most importantly, the food was exceptional. We all four ordered different entrees with my teenager assigning me to order hers. Since I know that drill means she'll eat half of mine as well as her own, I ordered the blackboard special flatbread for her and the stuffed chicken breast for me. Grandma ordered short ribs and Auntie ordered a burger with the olive oil baked potatoes, better than fries. After two weeks of mostly seafood we were ready for something else but this place also had several seafood entrees as well. My chicken breast was perfectly done, stuffed with cheeses, bacon and other yumminess. Whew. It was delicious. And huge. My daughter finished it for me after devouring her own generously sized flatbread. G'ma loved her ribs and Auntie her burger, too. We ate out at least two meals a day for most of the 15 days of travel and this was by far the best meal we had. I highly recommend this restaurant. I'd happily go again if we had it here in San Francisco.

While being the best restaurant in town isn't very hard in Maitland, this place is truly exceptional. You will have a slow dinner here, so visit expecting good food and conversation. We ate two dinners here. The haddock was exceptional the first night. I had a lobster nioki and my wife had chicken, a house specialty the next evening. It was a wonderful dining experience and the servers were excellent. If you want something quick, go to the general store instead. But if you want an excellent experience, you need to come here.
