Reviews praise The Cellar Door’s food, set-lunch value and warm staff; some guests note limited menus, mixed ale quality and occasional shabby decor or service lapses.
The waiter and waitress were so incredibly accommodating! I proposed to my girlfriend earlier that day and mentioned it to the staff, and the brought us a lovely bouquet of flowers and a dessert! Obviously the food and dessert was incredible. Will always recommend Cellar Door to travelers and locals!
.Had an excellent birthday meal. The food was excellent and plentiful. The service was very professional . Recommend the beef wellington. If you are in Durham it's well worth a visit. Thanks Alex and team .
Me and my husband had our anniversary dinner here last night and our food was exceptional! We recommend the chicken on the set menu and the beef shin. Service was brilliant the ladies who served were just lovely! We would definitely return. Although I wouldnt be as dressed up next time, I expected dimmer lighting and a different atmosphere. Decor did no match the quality of the food. Overall though 9/10! Thank you
Stopped into this historic inn while visiting Durham for the day, beautiful view of the river if it’s not too cold or rainy and you can sit outside. From the front street we went through the small entrance, down a series of stairs to the pretty dining room where we were seated. They have rather eclectic menu with prix fix and ala carte options. We had a few drinks from their extensive list and proceeded to order a plate of calamari with a saffron sauce, a little different and nicely prepared, we had some delicious focaccia bread that accompanied my excellent falafel salad with pomegranate and chick peas, odd combination that worked pretty well. We also had a roasted chicken breast served with a caccio y pepe Italian sauce and mashed potatoes which was absolutely fabulous, chicken was fresh, juicy and nicely done, the sauce was divine. Interesting flavors all around and it was nice to get away from the usual British fare.

The Cellar Door occupies two adjoining town-front spaces, which creates a series of small, intimate dining nooks rather than one big room — this is why window seats are prized and why meals often feel quietly personal. Regulars also mention occasional surprise treats from the kitchen, so tell staff if you’re celebrating and you might get a chef’s flourish.
