The Court Yard Hotel, nestled in the historic town of Leixlip, opened its doors in June 2005, with the esteemed approval of the Hon. Desmond Guinness. This remarkable establishment stands on the original site of Guinness, a nod to its rich heritage, and offers guests a taste of history with a modern twist—featuring a contemporary version of Arthur’s porter served at Arthurs Bar. The story of Guinness in Leixlip dates back to 1752, when Archbishop Price bequeathed a noteworthy sum to his servant, Richard Guinness, and his son, Arthur, who was just 27 at the time. In 1756, Arthur established a brewery on Main Street, marking the true beginning of an industry that would go on to achieve global recognition. The original lease for this property, with Arthur's signature visible at the bottom, is proudly displayed beside the main reception of the hotel, connecting guests to this storied past. In 1759, Arthur Guinness made a pivotal move to St. James Gate in Dublin, leaving his brother Richard in charge of the Leixlip Brewery. This marked the inception of the world-renowned Guinness brand, with Arthur residing on the premises while pioneering various types of beer, including the beloved dark porter. Arthur’s journey came to an end in 1803, and he was laid to rest just a short drive from the hotel. His legacy continued as the Guinness family returned to Leixlip in 1958 when the Hon. Desmond Guinness purchased Leixlip Castle, rekindling the family’s ties to the area that had witnessed their ancestors' trades and triumphs. The castle remains a scenic backdrop, viewable from the hotel’s luxurious bedrooms.
