Our first time at this restaurant. We wanted to try something different for New Year’s Eve. Forced to purchase a pre fixed menu at $125 per person. I don’t do appetizers or dessert but was forced to pay for it. They never posted this on their website so it was a total surprise! Too late to make other arrangements. They did not take into court food allergies or diabetics. The food was ok, nothing special so not sure about the price gauging! We won’t be back.
We had the NYE prix fixe dinner. The whole production seemed like a casual restaurant trying to do haute cuisine--they just don't know how to do it. First app was a truffled deviled egg--delicious. This was followed by cream of crab soup--excellent soup, clumps of crab meat. Seafood plate was mixed. Stone crab had been cracked so that you could not possibly get all the meat out of the claw. Shrimp was quite fresh, but cocktail sauce was extremely thick--was it fresh? Oysters were delicious. Main course was duck. Meat was served in about 1-inch cubes. Hard to tell how it was cooked. Duck was tough, and skin was not crisp. Sauce had flavor, but was weak. This was served with brussels sprouts that were very well cooked. For dessert, we had cheesecake and apple crumble. The apples were not fully cooked, and the cheesecake was still frozen and not particularly tasty when it did thaw. When dinner is $125 per person, plus service, a paper napkin is not acceptable, and drinking wine from a plastic glass is not acceptable either. Service was by young people who apparently had not been trained, which could be simply because the restaurant usually serves more casual fare. The service was not up to par, left us without eating utensils twice during the meal, and tended to bring new dishes before we finished the previous course.
The place is historic and charming, the kitchen isn't firing on all cylinders. Several dishes were cold, including the soup. You can tell they have a hood product when they are on their game. Will certainly give it another shot
Our food was an overall solid B with the exception of the watermelon salad which was an A . We shared the crab dip which was super salty although tasty. Our entrees were the branzino and the chicken. The chicken especially was probably a solid B, nothing special. The branzino was very good and the fresh vegetables accompanying both proteins were also very good, Although nothing, with the exception of the watermelon salad, was exceptional. The real detractor was the noise level which was so intense that we couldn't hear each other speak. Even the server was having a hard time hearing his customers over the din. A few noise softeners on the ceiling and on the walls would help tremendously. But the view is absolutely spectacular as is the setting
