Thompson's - Derry
Thompson's
Description
Thompson's restaurant at City Hotel has garnered a mix of experiences from diners, resulting in a polarized reputation. Some patrons found the food quality and service lacking, citing poor portion sizes, delayed service, and unkempt facilities as significant drawbacks. Complaints included overpriced dishes and indifferent staff, leading to dissatisfaction and a desire to seek alternative dining options. Conversely, others praised the welcoming atmosphere, attentive service, and delightful food, especially enjoying well-prepared dishes at reasonable prices. Overall, the restaurant appears to struggle with consistency, prompting recommendations for improvement or a reconsideration of dining choices among visitors to Derry.

Feedback
After arriving in Derry~Londonderry in the afternoon, we opted to dine at the hotel's restaurant instead of going out, and we were pleased with our decision. The food was fantastic and reasonably priced! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
We don't typically dine out often, but decided to treat ourselves since our kitchen is currently out of commission due to a burst water pipe. We were extremely disappointed with our choice to dine at Thompson's, the restaurant at City Hotel. We should have been wary when we saw it was empty on Easter Sunday. We arrived at 5:30 p.m. and the only highlight of the meal was the view of the Peace Bridge across the Foyle. The service was slow and the staff seemed unhappy and unhelpful. The food we received was of poor quality: small portions, and even basics like chips and burgers were subpar. The 10oz steak was minuscule and the lamb consisted of only three small strips of fat, all for the steep price of £23. Our total bill for four people, including mains, 2 desserts, and drinks, amounted to almost £140. We were charged £11.37 for four small cokes! The men's toilets were in such a dreadful state - you would never expect to see such conditions even at a festival. It was appalling. As a resident of Derry, I am ashamed that this is the type of dining experience we are offering to both locals and visitors. They need to improve significantly or sell the establishment, as it no longer lives up to the standard of the hotel it once was. We will never be returning.
The meal was very expensive and took nearly an hour to be served. The waiting staff were indifferent and slow. The food was terrible, particularly the burger and chips. The 10oz steak was small and the £23 lamb dish was tiny. We were so unsatisfied that we had to stop at a chip shop on our way home. The decor and furnishings were worn out, and the men's toilets were in a terrible state. This was a disappointing and expensive dining experience that we will not be repeating.
The food was really good and the service was excellent. They make you feel welcome and the food is really good. I had the feather blade beef in Bourginion sauce and it was moist, tender and full of flavour.
