The Downsman - Crawley
The Downsman
Description
The Downsman, a modest pub in Southgate, surprisingly excels in Indian cuisine, making it a go-to destination for flavorful dishes. Guests have often praised the biryani, kebabs, and chicken tikka, while expressing disappointment with some curry offerings. Despite varying experiences depending on the chef, the overall atmosphere remains warm and welcoming, with attentive staff and safety measures in place. Diners have enjoyed successful events, such as birthday parties, and many appreciate the quick delivery service. While some dishes may miss the mark occasionally, the pub's commitment to quality Indian food keeps patrons returning for more.

Feedback
I visited this restaurant in April 2018 and found the food to be okay. I decided to give it another try with my friends on Saturday. The biryani was excellent, well done. However, the lamb bhuna was poor, similar to the lamb stew in curry sauce from 2018. The chicken madras was absolutely awful. Moving on, the kababs were excellent and tasty, the naan was brilliant, and the chicken tikka was very good. Unfortunately, the curry dishes were disappointing, as they seemed to be stewed in curry sauce. The BBQ dishes were good. Overall, the prices were a bit expensive for the quality of food. My experience in 2018 was not great, and unfortunately, the visit in 2022 was no better. I apologize for the honest feedback.
I was disappointed with my recent experience at this restaurant. The quality has declined, the prices are too high, portions are small, items were missing from my order, and they no longer provide side dishes. I will not be ordering from here again, unfortunately.
We dined at The Downsman this week and I must say the staff were excellent. They checked our temperatures upon entry, took our contact details, and provided detailed information on the venue layout, one-way system, and restroom procedures. We felt safe and welcomed. The restaurant was not too busy, so we were able to find our own table. There was a slight delay in placing our orders, but the food arrived hot and delicious. We were surprised to receive our meals in takeout bags with wooden cutlery and styrofoam plates. It would have been helpful to know this in advance. Despite this, we enjoyed our meal and disposed of the waste in the provided bag. Overall, we were satisfied with the food and service and would return, but a heads up on the cutlery situation would have been appreciated.
A work colleague suggested we ate here rather than the normal high street curry houses. It was fab. Nice to be able to enjoy real ale with great Indian food and sports on the tv we really enjoyed the night and all reasonably priced too.Staff friendly. This will now be a regular for me when I come to Crawley !
Visited this pub with my customers who recommended the food. From the outside, I thought we were just visiting a normal neighbourhood pub, however was very wrong when we walked inside. For a Thursday night it was very busy. Warmly greeted by the staff who set up a tab for me, took our drinks order and then gave is the menu to look over. They dont do table service which is not an issue at all. The menu is loaded with great starters/bar snacks etc in addition to great mains. Very simple and traditional curry dishes aswell as a great tandoori menu and chef specials. Speed of service was faultless and the food was fantastic. If you are in Crawley, be sure to search for this hidden gem.
