Contribute Feedback What R M doesn't like about Heck's Hungry Traveler:
Our only experience with Heck's was during July 2008. The dinner service was slow, the staff seemed to be arguing with one another, and the food was just acceptable. A group of Scouts showed up asking whether they could eat there (it was about 45 minutes before closing) and the staff didn't seem too keen on their business. The Scouts left and we won't be back. Hecks has the best burger in town -scratch that, county -wait...state? Walking in will take you back to an old-fashioned retro style diner from the 70's. Everything but the floor is wood paneled. New Mexico and its residents have a way about them and as far as ways go, Heck's way is very friendly. Some of the booths are a little banged up, I recommend going for a table in the back. The soups are all scratch and change day to day. The frys are massive. Crispy on the outside and mashy on the inside. I cannot over-emphasize the burger. Huge without skimping on taste. Salads are a bit lack-luster, but passable (remember, you're eating in the middle of no-where? . Chicken-fried steak is also pleasing. and the mashed potatoes and green beans are my favorite sides. They also do some decent coffee and great chicken fingers Walking in, it's easy to feel a bit out of place from the locals, but think nothing of it. Once you get over whether or not this place likes your or not (the food and service is good no matter what you'll feel right at home. The only time to avoid this place is when it's being over-run with boy scouts from philmont. It's not unusual to have to wait over an hour for food when this happens. Scouts coming off the trail can pack away food and can easily take orders for a table 3 or 4 times their own size.
I learned everything here that needs to be known about the industry! Thanks Dave! Maxmiliano Machuca
