The newly opened Cadadia bar/cafe in the Mejorada section of Merida is a little gem. Swedish meatballs in the Yucatan? Yes, when served up by owner Emma Etta. The food from the meatballs, to sliders, to roasted vegetable tartine or roasted chicken dinner are neither Mexican nor Yucatecan but are inflected by and often carry the colorful influences of the region and its long history. Start with the Piña mezcal habañero cocktail and you can't go wrong. Order some spiced nuts or Mediterranean olives to go with it and you'll feel like you're in an old Spanish tapas bar. Located in an historic building with its old tile floors, tall french doors, ceiling fans, red velvet banquette and crystal chandelier, Etta has created a funky and genuine atmosphere that reminded me of the New Orleans Bywater district. The bombed out warehouse across the street with its art school graffiti adds just the perfect touch to keep this place hip and a far cry from all the slick and upcoming new eateries in Centro. Excellent service, by the way.

The newly opened Cadadia bar/cafe in the Mejorada section serves up a surprisingly sophisticated and totally different menu for Merida. Swedish meatballs in the Yucatan? Yes! done with a colorful twist by owner Emma Etta. Delicious roasted vegetable tartine, sliders, roasted chicken dinner......all good. This isn't Yucatecan or Mexican food, but just good food done with the occasional Mexican flare and inflection. Begin with the piña mezcal habañero cocktail and you're off to a good start. Order some tapas like spicy mixed nuts or spiced Mediterranean olives and you'll feel like you're in Spain. An historic building, French doors, ceiling fans, the crystal chandelier in the bar, the red velvet banquette and a generally funky atmosphere coupled with elegant touches and unpretentious waitstaff bring back flashes of the New Orleans Bywater section. All this added to views of the bombed out warehouse and it's art center graffiti across the street and you're talking atmosphere.
