Cafe Michelle - Chicago
Cafe Michelle
Description
This restaurant offers a striking contrast between ambiance and dining experience. While the staff is consistently praised for friendliness and attentiveness—even during busy times—the food quality often falls short of expectations, especially considering the high prices. Signature dishes like turkey sandwiches and shrimp tacos are frequently described as mediocre, rarely justifying the steep costs. Some menu items deviate from traditional preparations, confusing diners. Additionally, inconsistent adherence to COVID-19 protocols and occasional menu discrepancies further detract from the experience. Ideal for casual drinks and scenic views, the establishment may disappoint those seeking standout culinary offerings.

This restaurant is way too expensive for the quality of food they offer. I paid $20 for a sourdough turkey sandwich that was subpar compared to Panera, $25 for three shrimp tacos that didn't measure up to my local Mexican restaurant, and $14 for a pre-made cocktail. Either they need to lower their prices to match the mediocre pub food, or they need to significantly improve the quality of their dishes. I don't mind paying $20-$30 for a meal if it's worth it, but in this case, it definitely wasn't. The service was friendly, but the food took a long time to arrive despite the lack of crowds. This place might be okay for a beer and people-watching, but I would recommend skipping the food.
I arrived at Cafe Michelle for brunch, only to find out that they don't serve any breakfast or brunch items. Additionally, the menu prices were double what was listed on OpenTable, with the average item costing around $18. When I inquired about breakfast options, the waitress was very rude and seemed annoyed that we were asking about the menu. We ordered water, but they only provide bottled water for which they charge. Ultimately, we decided to leave and find another place for breakfast. It's really unfortunate, as the location and ambiance were lovely.
The restaurant is not adhering to COVID-19 guidelines. The host was not wearing a mask, and guests who arrived without masks were seated. These guests were also permitted to move to and from the restroom without wearing masks.
The prices here are just astronomical. I paid $20 for a turkey sandwich on sourdough that was of lesser quality than what you’d find at Panera, and they called it a burger. The stale chips that came with it didn't help either. Then there were the shrimp tacos—$25 for three that weren’t even as good as what you'd get at a local Mexican restaurant. And don’t get me started on the $14 premade cocktail. Seriously, either the prices need to be adjusted to match the mediocre food quality, or the food needs a significant upgrade to justify the costs. I'm more than willing to spend $20 to $30 on a meal if the quality is worth it, but this was not the case at all. The server was pleasant, but given that it wasn't busy, the food took longer to arrive than expected, which really detracted from the experience. This place might be fine for grabbing a beer and people-watching, but I'd definitely skip the food.
