Tuesdays are Karaoke night which provided some great moments even though I can not sing well at all. Our bartender, Dakota, was great and both my girlfriend and I agreed we would come back just because of how he treated us throughout the night! Give both sides of Carney's a shot and you're sure to find something you like!

However, t... read more I’ve been a longtime customer of Carney's Restaurant in Cape May and understand the challenges of staffing and finding skilled kitchen help nowadays. However, the food during my recent visit didn’t meet expectations. I ordered a Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad, a burger platter, and a crab cake sandwich platter. The fry oil tasted old, the fries were overcooked, and the crab cake sandwich came without the usual sauce. The traditional Chicken Caesar Salad arrived with no chicken. I politely returned it to the excellent server, who brought it back with some diced chicken scattered on top. It was barely there—small, dry pieces—and I had to search for them. When I mentioned this, the waitress apologized and offered to replace it. The new salad was no better, with the same dry chicken and stale croutons. I later learned that the cook is only 16 years old with limited experience, and the owner's son recently took over as the managing owner. My advice to the owner: if you can’t find a skilled chef or experienced short-order cook, you need to step in yourself to ensure quality before dishes leave the kitchen. Your reputation is on the line. Customers won’t accept subpar food and service, especially at higher prices. If you want to maintain your legacy, consider culinary school or proper management training. Speaking from 22 years as an owner-operator, I’ve seen how important it is to uphold food standards. While the location looks great and the addition of pizza and new items is a nice touch, it doesn’t compare to the quality it once had. Lastly, about the $2.04 surcharge for no cash payment—I paid cash and still saw this fee, which seems unfair. Good luck moving forward; a strong bar might boost profits, but the food has to be spot-on if you expect to charge those prices.

When we asked for a straw for our drink, the older bald bartender at the back bar responded with attitude. He then threw a straw down harshly onto the dirty bar right in front of us and gave us a glare afterward. With so many other options and a menu that doesn’t justify the prices, I strongly recommend avoiding this overpriced place altogether!
