Desayuno - Canutillo

Peppe's in far northwest El Paso, actually Canutillo, has been a favorite for years serving West Tex Mex food in the Grigg's restaurant style old timers remember. Sauces are mild so you can actually taste the food not just the heat. Plates come with vinegary slaw. Chile con queso has lots of mild chiles and other stuff in it and is outstanding. Peppe's is also one of the few places offering fruit empanadas among dessert selections. All have been great except the apricot ones which, like everyone elses were made with those pale yellow, tasteless things the mid east calls apricots. Not now. The new ones have a filling that is bright orange with just as bright a sweet, strong apricot flavor and they are stuffed with filling, not the thin veneer between two thick pieces of dough offered other places. In my opinion it is worth the drive just to check them out but I'd also suggest trying out the rest of the food if you haven't been before. It remains one of my and my friends favorites.

Food was good. Not greasy. Ordered A la Mexicana with mushrooms, jalapeños, onion, tomato and it was perfect. Got the Strawberry fields smoothie so filling . Only reason I gave four stars is because it's far away. Customer service was great as well. No inside sitting.
