Ramones Mexican Bbq - Camp Pendleton
Ramones Mexican Bbq
Description
Perched on the shore inside a military base, this casual Baja-Californian spot offers scenic beachfront dining with fish tacos, Cali burritos, carne asada fries and margaritas. Patrons praise fast, friendly food-truck service and family-friendly tacos, while others report inconsistent food quality, cold or overcooked items, slow or unfriendly service and frequent shortages of advertised alcoholic drinks. Prices are mid-range and portions can be small. Good for military patrons and beachgoers seeking casual Mexican by the water, but note restricted access and occasional supply problems.

I had high expectations for this restaurant. Situated on the base, it offers fantastic views and has a prime location with an enticing menu. However, I experienced some difficulty while ordering because I was hoping for a more traditional Mexican food selection. I didn't find many options featuring beans or rice. Instead, I opted for Dave's California burrito, which includes French fries, beef, chicken, and cheese – and that’s pretty much it. Was it bad? Not exactly, but it certainly didn't impress me. It seemed to lack soul, authenticity, and flavor. I'm familiar with the Cali burritos found at food trucks, and this one was missing guacamole, as well as some rice and beans, which I would have really appreciated. I know they are putting in a lot of effort to improve, but I believe it would be beneficial for them to elevate their dishes. The green salsa was decent, but I longed for a bit more heat. Sometimes you go in searching for something specific and end up needing to appreciate what is available.
I visited this restaurant while spending the day with family at Del Mar Beach, and unfortunately, it was my only lunch option within walking distance. My family planned to come back for dinner, but the restaurant closed earlier than advertised, which might have been a blessing in disguise, as they ended up opting for In-N-Out just outside the gate instead. I ordered five corn dogs for three people, paying $3.50 each (not too bad for a place aimed at tourists). I expected them to be the standard, cheap, low-quality hot dogs, and I wasn’t disappointed in that regard. Each corn dog was individually wrapped and placed in a paper bag. However, when I got back to my family and unwrapped one of them, I was horrified. It was severely overcooked, to the point where the cornmeal coating had separated from the almost rock-hard hot dog inside. I hoped it was just a fluke, but sadly, it turned out to be a consistent problem with the rest. Even a generous application of pre-packaged mustard couldn't save them. Honestly, it wasn't worth the trek back through the sand to complain about it. My wife and granddaughter were let down, but the seagulls certainly got a good meal out of it! As for the service, the woman who took my order wasn't exactly friendly either. Overall, this place definitely did not meet my expectations.
I've been twice in a year and both times they were out of numerous alcoholic drinks that are advertised; that is disappointing. Thereafter, the food is adequate. Meh. I'd eat elsewhere. Had the Arizona burrito and it was small. Also, they removed the umbrellas which makes it unpleasant to eat at their outdoor tables.
They filleddd my burrito with cheese! And it was cold! Used to be such a good place but it's not anymore. Not worth 15 bucks!!!
