I recently stopped beers in Grendels at Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA, for some decent craftsmanship. I was on a short trip to Manhattan. The bartender was friendly and welcoming. In my opinion, Grendels is the quintessential Harvard Bar and has not changed since I was founded in 1998. Also the food is decent and they have some nice offers. View all feedback.
What User doesn't like about Grendel's Den Restaurant Bar:
Grendels is fine. It's just good. It's there if you drink a late night and sub-par, but filling food, but I wouldn't go for much else. The staff (mostly) always takes to you and transfer your orders (this can be a staff problem and not their fault, but it still affects the service), and they will not tell you when the last call is (that has happened several times) so it is super difficult to know where you stand with... Fun bar and restaurant young energetic and engaging staff food is some typical bar fare but there are some unique items too. Definitely try this place outFood: 4/5
Harvard Square heart and soul institution. Step into Grendel’s and you’ll feel at home. It’s a cozy spot great for a drink and a bite to eat. Big menu full of classics and comfort food as well as many vegetarian options. Great prices, awesome staff, good selection of beers and cocktails. Nothing complicated or overworked- just an overall great place to grab a bite.
Just ok for me. Came highly recommended by several former college people and maybe it had a heyday back when. The happy hour pricing made the cost very reasonable but the amount of food was a bit underwhelming. Good flavor though. All the sandwiches had lots of empty bread space. Beer selection was underwhelming. The cold clam chowder tasted off and did in fact take one member of our party down with a vengeance. Service was pretty poor. All in all a pass for me.
Every college town needs one of these. brisket sandwich is phenomenal, chips are yummy, and a good selection of drinks. but what makes grendel 's a staple is the divey, underground, no nonsense atmosphere. seat yourself, be yourself, and treat yourself. all walks of life are welcome. it 's hard to not feel at home here. though people are mostly laid back here, you get the grungy feel of a good regulars bar. this is one of my favorite places for a quick stop with friends. plus they 're open late!grendel 's is CLASSIC and i hope they stay alive for the long-haul. cheers.
