Sowerby Bridge Fisheries - Calderdale

I waited 20 minutes for cold, greasy fish with gravy that tasted like BBQ sauce. The only good part was the warm chips, though they weren't even hot. Despite being the only person in the restaurant, the quality of the food was disappointing. I would have returned the meal if I lived closer. Such a shame!

The worst Fish and Chips I have ever had the misfortune to experience ! We only chose this fisherie because it was the only one delivering in the Sowerby Bridge during the lockdown. Unfortunately, our very favourite and regular fish and chip shop Golden Haddock were not offering delivery. So, we were resorted to this one. Big mistake ! From the first order my fish was swimming in what tasted like old oil. The box it came in was saturated in oil not crispy batter, but soggy oil. It was vile ! We gave it three attempts, but it did not improve.We too were baffled by all the five star ratings, then it was brought to my attention by the owner herself that she has only had the business for the past few months ! Hence the good reviews, as they all go back to the beginning of this year and last year ! Pre present owner. I reminded the owner that fish swim in water not oil !!

Food was burnt. Batter black on the inside. Chips with black spots on. Cooked in old oil. Won’t eat there again

So...if I visit a fish and chip shop, I'm normally quite gentle. But I've visited this one FIVE TIMES now, and there have been serious issues each time. I wouldn't even mention it, but it worries me that this place has a full five average review. (Albeit from just half a dozen reviews. I'll leave that with you. I wouldn't want people to think it was as good as the reviews suggest, so this is my take. 1st visit. Fish and chips. Chips wonderful. Beautifully browned. But fish batter like soggy cardboard. 2nd visit. As above. 3rd visit. Fishcake and chips. Chips amazing again. Fishcake had lovely batter but was frozen in the centre. 4th visit. Fishcake and chips. Chips great. Fishcake had stiff hard batter and was frozen in the centre again. 5th visit. Just got a chip butty. Bread was decent. Chips were beautiful. Really nice. One issue...there were 23 of them. That's right. Just 23. And that's why I give the place one star.

The service at this restaurant is excellent and the fish and chips are delicious with generous portions. I would highly recommend this fish shop. I have visited multiple times and am looking forward to my next visit.
