I have to say I was skeptical to try this place but glad I did it's true the decor is a little old but not that bad. The food was really good and the staff was very friendly, the view is gorgeous, they have to get a bigger sign or put more lights to the one they have we missed it twice that street is very dark and it's hard to see the sign at night. Thats my only negative comment about the place. If you like quiet pl... View all feedback.
Finally had the opportunity to go to The Old Gristmill after living in the area for 31 years. I have driven past this place many times and always wanted to give it a try, but never got around to it. I had heard from friends it was good, but from the outside I guess I couldn't get my head around dining here. Well I was wrong. Yes the place is old and a bit outdated, but that doesn't make it a bad place. Sometimes you have to look beyond a buildings facade. As I said, the place is a bit outdated, so you'll need to look past that. The main room has a number of views of the waterfalls on the Shawangunk Kill and the tables are well spaced apart for privacy, which I like. The food is outstanding. I had the Rack of Lamb and my wife had the Rib Eye Steak. Both were served with a side of potatoes, carrots and cabbage. Portions were large and I thought the food was well prepared and presented nicely. We also had dessert; Apple Strudel and Chocolate Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream. The service was very good. Very friendly staff with the right amount of attention. If you're looking for a nice back road country place in Sullivan County NY, The Old Gristmill fits that bill. Overall a nice time and I would go back again for another special occasion. Food: 5 Stars Service: 5 Stars Ambiance: 4 Stars The place need a little updating Wine List: 4 Stars Could use a few less expensive items Price: Location: Off the beaten path. Country backroads
Took my brother and sister in law for dinner heard the food was great here it was not. We started with an escargot appetizer that was served with wonder bread toast! The only decent meal was the special my sister in law had the seafood dish that she ordered over pasta. I thought would try the goulash it was a brown mess with no flavor. My husband had ribs which were ok, but not anything special. My brother had the Weimer Schnitzel it was tasteless and the mashed potatoes were watery and worse than boxed. We were celebrating a birthday and they did a nice job on the cake plate but the dessert was just meh. For the price and the hype, we expected SO much more. What a disappointment! Oh, and we met the crabby waitress having read the reviews we were ready for her but she really needs to find another vocation! Don't waste your time or money on this place there are better choices in the area.
The food was absolutely delicious, however, the service was terrible! We were served by a rude waitress who while I respect has probably been there for many many years she did not seem to appreciate new customers. It was our first time there and we had wanted to try this place since we moved here a year ago. The waitress was rude, condescending, and dismissive when we asked questions about the menu. She had the nerve to tell us we ordered too much food! Like really? This is your bill and tip lady- if we wanted one of everything off the menu you bring it to us with a smile. Both my mom and husband ordered the lamp chops and had asked for mint jelly- so she brought one small ramekin of it and placed it in front of my mom. When my husband asked the bus boy for some for him the waitress came back over to the table, grabbed the mint jelly from my mom and placed it in front of my husband and rudely said there 's enough for both of you. Again, really?! It 's mint jelly- we 're talking $3.99 at Shoprite for a whole jar! Not to mention we 're paying $30 for the plate of lamp chops (which were delicious by the way) and you can 't spare one more small dish of mint jelly? Sadly, we may not be back because of how horrible the waitress was. Again- kudos to the chef! The food was amazing- go here if you want great food with a view but don 't expect great service!
Gem in the rough Austrian restaurant my brother-in-law and his wife found while passing thru and lost looking for someplace else. Establishment is a house down off the road so its hard to see that it is a restaurant. Views of the river it sits on is very nice! Excellent food, large portions, menu is priced above average but you always take home a doggie bag so you get your moneys worth here. Their specials are always good and they always have new desserts to offer.Chef/owner knows what hes doing, service is solid however they do rely on one waitress to pull the weight so its best to go early dinner to avoid delays, staff are polite, attentive and very knowledgeable about the food. This place can hang with 5 star restaurants in NYC however the decor is dated and could use some upgrading but the food is most important and they have that down. Keep up the good work!!! Dave
The service was absolutely terrible. The waitress reeked of booze and treated us like an inconvenience even though we were the only table in the entire place. The food? Spectacular! I had the Cassoulet special. Pork tenderloin, lamb and duck over a white bean ragout served in a copper pot. It was perfect. It was flavorful, cooked perfectly and beyond delicious. I savored every single bite. Dessert was a homemade apple crisp with rum raisin, pumpkin ice cream. This was the absolute best meal I've ever had (minus the service) From the previous reviews, they need to seriously change the server.
