5* Brooklyn brunch is a high watermark. Here, to succeed you have to get the mix of tradition, expectation and originality just right. Getting my 5* here is like Usain bolt winning the 100m dash, while throwing shot-put in one hand, and the discus in the other. They almost get things right here. The peak is the Brussels sprout has. Cooked just right, with flavour to burn. Subbing out the bacon for avocado is a good call. The sprouts have flavour enough to bring the avo to its best. I could whine about the cup-of-joe. But I guess I'll take NYC's predictably insipid coffee flavoured water over a new york interpretation of flat white (no, not a euphemism for an Anglo cadaver). My friend's grits and shrimp didn't quite make it. The burger was good without being great. All in all, it's a great spot for good food.
Okay, let me start by saying I adore Sunshine Co. I visited there a few years ago with a friend and had the eggs Benedict and it was amazing! So I decided to bring my friends to try it out. Unfortunately this go round we had a few mishaps, but the food was still good in my opinion. My friend had steak eggs and asked for it medium well. She wanted it more pink than it was. I had hair in both of my plates and the servers apologetically brought me new food. The server we had was great although he didn’t know much English. We all had a Frozen Pomegranate Margaritas. The drink was good and the rim was a bit spicy. It was a nice day, so we sat outside and enjoyed the breeze. Overall, I would recommend this place. It’s a chill environment to have a nice meal.
Stopped by for weekend dinner after the Lightscape show at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, luckily got in a few minutes before a big crowd showed up. Staff are very busy but friendly and efficient. Warm lively vibe, intimate but not pretentious, good for dates or dinners with family or friends either way. We ordered the pesto pasta, burger and truffle chicken pot pie. We were all pretty happy. The pesto pasta was very creamy which wasn’t expected but still ok, just a bit heavy. Pebble beach cocktail was pretty good and strong, might be better with a rum instead but that’s just me. Jealous of their brunch menu, I’ve always seen this place very busy in the summers for their outdoor dining. Will definitely try brunch next time. Solid neighborhood spot to keep on your list!
I would like to let anyone who is planning to go to Sunshine to eat to strongly reconsider because there are many other phenomenal dining options on Washington Avenue. Here is the experience that my family and I had. My husband and I both grew up in Brooklyn but came back to visit from out of town. We chose Sunshine because Yelp said it was dog friendly. We opted to leave the dog home and we came out with my parents in law, sister in law, and our 8 month old baby girl. After ordering coffee and mimosas, our waiter opted to serve piping hot coffee right over the stroller where my baby was sitting. My husband was livid! As I turned to caution the waiter about how he was unsafely serving, he literally dropped his entire tray of drinks and coffee right on my baby’s stroller. Glass and ceramic cups were broken, liquid splashed all into my hair and eye, my stroller saturated with liquor and coffee and sharp shards were everywhere. The waiter knew he messed up and briefly apologized. And by brief, I mean he said “I’m sorry” and that was it. There was no acknowledgement or care that hot and alcoholic beverages were all over me, possibly the baby, or the stroller. My party was in complete disbelief but we kept our composure as we ensured that the baby wasn’t burned or injured. She was screaming and crying from the commotion. I had to wipe all that was spilled from my face and clothing. The manager and the waiter cleaned the mess from the floor. Neither of them asked if the baby or I was okay. The manager didn’t say anything to us… she didn’t even introduce herself as the manager. My stroller and cup holders were so saturated that I had to literally request a bucket to empty the liquid from, and a rag to wipe it down myself. The staff seemed completely unbothered, with a lack of empathy or apology that any human would expect to have received if ever in this situation. Because we did not want to loose the day due to time and scheduling constraints, we stayed for the meal. The food was not delicious at all. In fact it was inedible to mid, which added further insult to injury: 1)The French toast came out drowned in syrup and completely soggy. It was inedible. 2)The steak and eggs were ordered medium well and was so chewy that it went uneaten. 3)The shrimp and grits were extremely dry… it was literally 4 seasoned shrimp over a bed of grits…no gravy. 4) Huevos Rancheros was extremely bland. It did not taste like anything was seasoned in this entre. 5)BLT- Bread was toasted extra hard, bacon fried hard, boarder line burned, and overall DRY! At the end, they handed us the bill. I noticed that the drinks were not on it. I asked to speak to the manager and I informed her that it was really disgusting that such a dangerous situation occurred and that she didn’t have the decency to speak to us when the ordeal occurred. She said that she heard the waiter say sorry so she didn’t feel like it was necessary to say anything on the restaurants behalf. I informed her that as a manager, she should have said something in the moment to acknowledge us, and how bad the situation was, and how bad it could have been. My child was put in harms way twice! Let alone, I was drenched in liquid and there was no expression of care, regret, or empathy for the dangerous and embarrassing situation. She said she took the drinks off as the apology, and I let her know that it was not enough. We are more that capable of paying a bill, so her assumption that taking $30 worth of drinks off was a slap in the face. Acknowledgement would have been priceless! I spoke to her calmly and expressed my disappointment with her inaction and she dismissed us by saying “just don’t worry about it” and walked away. Paying the bill was not, or is never an issue… but clearly she did not understand the principal of it all. So I truly in my heart hope that anyone who may want to dine at Sunshine reads this and decides to pass. The lack of friendly and trained service, and the quality of food is not worth anyones time.
