Cheap food and you buy because of it. I do appreciate this kind of place because they cater a different market and they are typically hunger busters. Not everyone can dine in at "instagramable" places all the time! Set your expectation where it should be ... something to satisfy your crave for a quick Chinese hit and some fuel for your tummy. My strategy is to buy a box with 2 dishes: something that you can't go wrong with, like a fried egg, and something a bit riskier so if it's not nice at least you've got an egg and rice. Also try to come early - even when you want to have it as dinner - because there are more choices in the morning. (Learnt my lesson: I misses the box with omelette and teriyaki chicken combo). FYI: later in the day you can get 2 boxes for $7.
This place, I suppose they could call it a kantine, made of plastic cans of vitals, of which are extremely popular in midday. there is also a Vietnamese brotrolle section, which also has quite good trade. the demand for cheap food means that three huge woks are constantly on the cooktop, they stir brittle bark in black bean sauce, sweet and sour pork, honey and other mish mas of different meat, all served on a bed rice.
