The monarch is the first bar I have ever visited in berlin. that was about 6 years ago. today I still visit it often and it kept the same atmosphere as before:... read more The monarch is the first bar I have ever visited in berlin. that was about 6 years ago. today I still visit it often and it kept the same atmosphere as before: it is smokey as the hell, the music is good, the drinks are inexpensive and the amount is really nice. they have a kicker for those who have not come for the music in the rule they have to pay a small deck fee of 3-6 euro to get in and they should expect that they smell and in great need a shower. unnecessary today, do not take their super cool coat that they cannot wash in this place!

Judging by the menu... read more I went there for a concert so my experience may not be comparable to regular visitor's. The place is tiny and cozy. The acoustics is ok-ish. Judging by the menu it's rather a whisky bar than beer bar. They do have 2 or 3 beers, that I wouldn't recommend. Anyway, whatever you will drink you'll end up with hangover from the amount of cigarette smoke you'll soak with. The windows were shut and there was no air exchange. But maybe it was specifically for the event.

Alcohol free beer is not great. Wine is fine. The crowd however has a lot of people in button up shirts (weird in Berlin and in a dive bar) and A LOT of thirsty guys. I would avoid it as a woman unless. But the music was good.
