This restaurant was fantastic. The server was incredibly friendly and managed our large group effortlessly. The portions were very generous, and the French fries were delicious. I’m not sure what other reviewers were talking about when they said the fries weren't good. Since there were many of us, we sampled a variety of dishes. I will definitely come back if I'm in the area again.
This charming roadside eatery is a great spot for a bite to eat. It’s a small, locally owned business with a rustic and somewhat dated exterior. I ordered the French Dip, which was around $13-14, and it came with an enormous serving of homemade fries. If you love huge, hearty fries, this is definitely the place to go! There were so many fries that I could make leftover hash for days. The Au Jus dip was perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious. The woman who served us was incredibly sweet, too!
After hiking at Storm King and making the long drive to Rialto, my boyfriend and I were famished and stumbled upon Hungry Bear Cafe. This small, roadside eatery wasn't gourmet, but it certainly satisfied our hunger. I ordered the Bite Burger, which had a pleasant kick from the jalapeños and pepper jack cheese. It was served with an enormous portion of fries, though they were a bit on the oily side. We also tried a cup of chowder that was a little too chunky and creamy for my taste, almost like gravy. The highlight of our meal, however, was the apple pie paired with vanilla ice cream—absolutely delicious! Overall, it's a great place for a quick bite. I also loved the dollar bills that patrons had posted around the restaurant, so my boyfriend and I decided to leave one too!
The sandwiches themselves were pretty good for an old cafe; I had a roast beef dip, and my wife chose a Philly dip. Both sandwiches came with a hefty portion of fries—perhaps too large. Regrettably, the fries weren't very impressive. They were soft, a bit too oily, and lacked flavor. We should have gone for the side salad instead; we noticed other diners enjoying those, and they looked much more appetizing with plenty of veggies like bell peppers and mushrooms. I admit I felt a bit hesitant stepping into this place due to its rundown appearance. Nevertheless, if you find yourself in the area and are in need of a decent meal, this spot is worth a visit. Just make sure to pass on the fries.
How do we find such amazing places in Northern Virginia? The home-cooked food is fantastic, and the service from everyone in the restaurant is top-notch! The prices are extremely reasonable, too! My husband ordered the Hungry Bear, which included an omelet, toast, and hash browns, while I opted for a half order of sausage gravy with hash and a half order of French toast. Now, neither of us can move to go hiking!
