J.R. Maxwell Co. : ?Famous French onion soup.? I have been going to restaurants and ordering French onion soup whenever I could, but never rated them online. The ?famous? French onion soup is one of the best I have ever had. A nice amount of sweetsoft onions that you got with every scoop. The cheese was a perfect blend of cheese, stringy but not to stringy to the pointwhere it all comes of, and soft soaked bread at the bottom. All together, the flavors blended together marvelously. A Frenchonion soup worthy of fame.
Quiet restaurant in the heart of Bath. Great service. I had the Fish Chips; amazing! Especially the fish. My wife ordered Haddock with coleslaw. The slaw was very good, the Haddock lacked flavor... could've used a bit more seasoning. Would definitelyreturn.
A charming little pub and eatery in downtown Bath, ME, I stopped in to enjoy some local seafood. This place certainly has a rich history, complete with an inviting atmosphere and decor. I appreciated the effort of the only waitress, who was doing her best—it's surprising how many people nowadays seem reluctant to work. I started with a mixed greens salad and a cup of lobster soup. The soup was decent, but quite thin; I prefer a bisque-style with a richer base. It did contain large chunks of lobster, which was a plus. Unfortunately, the stuffed haddock didn’t meet my expectations. The sauce was a bit overwhelming, and the dish was baked to the point that the edges became tough. It seemed to be swimming in its own juices, which typically would be absorbed by the stuffing that was almost nonexistent. The cornmeal breading on the fish was unusual—I hadn’t encountered that before, and I would personally recommend against it. I’ll definitely consider trying something else if I return. It's a neat place, but I wasn't impressed with my dish. However, the captain's platter across from me looked much more appealing, featuring a generous serving of fried haddock, clams, and scallops.
We had a delightful dinner at JR Maxwell last night. As first-time visitors, we're eager to return. Downtown Bath has plenty to offer, and Maxwell's stands out as a top dining choice. The clam chowder certainly lives up to its reputation: creamy and packed with fresh clams. It was warm enough, though on our next visit, I would request it be served hotter. The broiled haddock was enjoyable, but a bit overcooked. The homemade coleslaw was fantastic. The service was attentive and courteous, and the prices were reasonable, especially considering the current inflation. Overall, it was a lovely meal and dining experience, and I highly recommend it.
