Sean's Bar in Athlone, the oldest pub in Ireland, offers a unique and historic experience. The large selection of beers, cozy atmosphere, and friendly staff make it a must-visit for anyone in the area. Live music, beautiful courtyard, and traditional Irish pub vibes create a memorable visit. The exceptional service and inviting atmosphere at Sean's Bar make it a top recommendation for those looking for a wonderful time in Athlone. With a rich history dating back to around 900 AD, this pub is not only the oldest in Ireland but also a charming spot to enjoy a pint of Guinness.
Good stop about halfway from Galway to Dublin. Great pub that claims to be the oldest (900CE) in Ireland and perhaps Europe. Nice front room, perhaps a bit dark, and there's a back area that's heated with a second bar.
I had been looking forward to visiting this place while planning my trip, and it didn’t disappoint. As my friend and I walked in, he turned to me and said, ‘Now this is an Irish pub.’ We quickly grabbed a seat and ordered a pint of Guinness. Then we wanted something more, so after chatting with the owner, we tried two fingers of Sean’s Whiskey—and even got some insider info on a show he’s working on for Netflix. The whiskey? Get it, enjoy it, and then get more. Incredibly smooth with fantastic flavor.
Drinks and drinks, so on a Sunday at noon this was a very brief stop as I still have a long drive back to Dublin. Sean's Bar dates back to 900 AD and they have the receipts to provide it. Ancient walls and quite rustic decor with a wide selection of Irish whiskeys and pints of Guinness, it is definitely cozy. The pub is located in the heart of Athlone and there might be some street parking nearby if you're lucky. Note that they do not serve food other than crisps.
