Recommended by locals, this is one of the best places in Spain for pulpo a la gallega . I 've tried it in various places across Spain and it 's definitely delicious at Cuba Sol. It easily gets crowded. We went there for lunch two days in a row and the dishes were as good as expected. Service is efficient. Prices are fair. Ask for their specialties.
Nothing recalls your attention on first sight (neither on second). In fact we chose it because it was cold outside and it looked bustling inside... The locals chose right, and the tapas we ordered, all traditional dishes, were simply delicious. We left the tapas tour for the summer and had a great meal... for about 12 euro per person.
This place is famous in Astorga. It has been in business for a long, long time, and it looks it! The decor is a shambles, old broken down tables and chairs, paper tablecloth, etc. Cleanliness is not their priority. To get to the back room you have to pass by the open kitchen door, and believe me, it hasn't seen a scrub down since the day it opened. The food, a variety of tapas, is edible but nothing memorable. The service is slow. I just can't recommend this place! But it is usually packed! Go figure.
Many restaurants cafés are modern, we where looking for the old type of cafe where you will find most of the local 'old man ' and we did visiting this restaurant. We wend in only for a glass of wine and they served a great local wine with superb tapas, we loved it.
Cubasol is one of the few places in Astorga that I try to go every day before lunch. Enjoy your wine or beer with a delicious free tapa. It seems they actually put effort into giving you a decent tapa even though it is free. In many places they will give you the slice of bread with chorizo, cheese or serrano ham, but not in Cubasol. It could be a mussel in tomato sauce, a small plate of kidney in spicy sauce, or many other unexpensive but delicious items they prepare on a daily basis. I am usually there on weekends or on tuesdays for the street market, I do not know if the rest of the week they do the same. In any case, if you do not know where to make a pit stop before lunch, Cubasol is always a good choice.
