12 Bones Smokehouse River - Asheville
12 Bones Smokehouse River
Description
Nestled in Asheville's vibrant art district, this smokehouse captivates with its lively atmosphere and ample seating, though it has garnered mixed reviews. While some diners rave about the flavorful pulled pork and tender ribs, others lament the inconsistencies in quality, with overcooked, dry meat and uninspired sides like canned beans. The service is quick and friendly, yet self-service expectations and pricing can come as a shock. Overall, it’s a hit-or-miss experience: a paradise for some barbecue lovers, while others find better options elsewhere. For those willing to brave the lines, it may still satisfy cravings for hearty, meaty dishes.

The food at 12 bones was very good. The only problem was that it didn 't compare favorably with my memory of the ribs from years ago. The sauce was great, but the ribs were dry and a bit chewey from having been slightly overcooked (in my opinion). I don 't travel to Asheville often, and today 's meal made 12 bones drop one notch in my unofficial rating scheme from the must go again ASAP to the solid choice for good eats category. My favorite side dish remains the jalapeño cheese grits. Yummmmm.
Both had the ribs and sides. Ribs were a little tough but tasty. Slaw and baked beans were very good. Sweet potato mash was sweet and too buttery. Green beans were average. A little pricey.
Despite the long wait food was worth it. Plenty of seating in and out. A quirky art and graffiti was the decor. Ribs were great. Tasty snd portions were large. Others in my party liked the brisket combos. All in all a very nice experience.
As for parking, there’s free parking available in a nearby lot, but be cautious as some lots are not in great condition. It’s also a very family-friendly place, with plenty of kids around.
