New Year's Eve: what food and what drinks accompany us on the way into the new year
A year comes to an end and as tradition would have it, we stay awake until it is really over on our side of the world. The question that arises here now is: What food and what drinks accompany us on the way into the new year?
Typical New Year's Eve dishes
The time until midnight can drag on quite a bit. So, it's good when the meal itself eats up an enormous amount of time.
If you don't want to think about a multi-course New Year's Eve menu, you can fall back on dishes that are already very time-consuming in themselves, and which are also among the most popular dishes at Christmas: Raclette and Fondue. These dishes are not only super easy to prepare, they also allow party guests and family to put together themselves what you like and what you have an appetite for.
If you take the time to create a multi-course menu, the following dishes might be a collection of ideas:
- Appetizers:
If you prefer to skip the midnight soup, you can start your New Year's Eve menu with a soup appetizer. This goes great with the cold weather outside and warms from the inside. Here, for example, a chestnut soup suitable for the season can be served. However, if you want to forego the soup as an appetizer, you are of course on the safe side with small appetizers, for example with salmon and cream cheese or with a fine salad. Here, of course, you can vary with hot and cold elements and also sometimes resort to more unusual variants such as the lukewarm beet salad or the grilled or deep-fried goat cheese.
- The main courses:
The main course should now be almost as extravagant as the occasion of the meal. Thus, wild boar or venison dishes can score extremely today. Whether as a roast or as a goulash, that is up to the chef or cook. If you prefer fishy dishes, salmon and pike-perch are certainly a good choice, as these two are also popular on New Year's Eve tables. As a vegetarian alternative, there are various dishes with sweet potatoes, savoy cabbage or cabbage, which also fit seasonally well into the menu. Dishes with pumpkin also adapt well to the weather.
- Dessert:
The pre-midnight sweet snack - sometimes called dessert, of course, cannot be missing from a nice big and lavish menu. Here, however, we must honestly say that there are no really special dishes that are only related to today's occasion or are prepared almost exclusively today. Everything is allowed here, so to speak: from muffins to crème brûlée to mascarpone quark dessert. Panna cotta is also allowed. - The midnight soup:
Not only on New Year's Eve a nice idea, but especially here it offers itself of course: the midnight soup. From the goulash soup to the tomato soup, everything can be served here - similar to the dessert. It only has to taste good.
And as drinks, of course, the sparkling wine, champagne and any other carbonated alcoholic beverages suitable for toasting.
