Disclaimer: I quit regularly eating Southern fried foods about 15 years ago. So, keep that in mind. I 'm trying to bulk up and sometimes that means deviating from my normal, expensive list of foods to grab some extra calories. This means more carbs and more fats. Where better to get those than a Southern cooking restaurant? Because it 's usually just me dining I can go about wherever I want to. Wanting something different than Mexican, BBQ, Italian, or Asian, I decided to give Family Tradition a try. I frequent the Publix next door and there 's usually no parking available in front of the restaurant. Today was Saturday and I expected it to be slower especially mid-afternoon. I was correct. No wait. Had my menu and tea within ,5 minutes. Awesome. I avoid fried foods most of the time but I do occasionally like fried chicken, fried chicken livers, or some fried fish. Lucky for me, they had fried cod from Alaska. Sold. The fish and chips , as expected, comes with French fries and one other veggie so I ordered cole slaw. The waitress offered my choice of biscuit or cornbread and the cheat choice for me was cornbread. Service was quick. Within about 15 minutes I had my meal. It was sans cornbread but no biggie. I 'll ignore the bread and move on. First the cole slaw. Spot on. No vinegary taste. Not overly sweet. Not baptized in mayo. Good job would eat that anytime. Before I forget, the tea was also good. I drink it unsweetened so I may be a little more picky about the flavor. It may have been Luzianne. Good job. The French fries were a little less appealing. In fact, they were greasy, cool, and soggy. I never out ketchup on good fries. These were not good fries (from frozen) so add more high fructose corn syrup to my meal from the ketchup to disguise the fries as food. I still have a rock in my belly an hour later. Not so good job. Lastly, the fish. Beer battered Alaskan pub cod. Now I 've been to Alaska. Several times. I have eaten seafood on the seacoast in a pub. What I typically expect in fish and chips is a light bodied fish (cod will do), a light crispy batter (beer batter will definitely do), and a most, tender, flaky meat that melts in your mouth (cod will do). When the waitress asked if I want cocktail or tartar sauce I almost said no. I mean fish, especially for fish and chips, should have plenty of flavor from the batter and the fish. Fur some reason, after about an 8 second pause, I said, I think I 'll try the tartar sauce . It 's a good thing I did because that 's what helped me come down the dense, bricky, fishy slabs on my plate. Look, I didn 't expect world class fare. I did expect effort. I could be wrong but I would say the fish was taken from the freezer, placed in the microwave for a couple of minutes to defrost , then tossed without any ceremony directly into the fryer. For me, next time I 'm that hungry, I will probably opt for something a little healthier and tastier. Quite disappointed actually. Just try, people. Try.
We got to the restaurant near the end of the breakfast shift, so they were out of some sides. We were able to get some creative options. The food was plentiful and delicious. The atmosphere is small, homey feel. Service was great. Enjoyed the experience. Dietary restrictions: Gluten-free
Service was outstanding. The restaurant was very clean. Service was great, and everyone was super friendly. The meatloaf, catfish and fried chicken were hot and perfectly prepared. Loved it.
