This place offers good sushi and a decent value. A bit surprised at some of the reviews as we had a completely different experience the service was lovely very polite and accommodating and helpful. Worth a visit for a quick bite to eat. The place is quite small so not great for groups 4 people. View all feedback.
What savy chrys doesn't like about Bay Sushi:
Stay away: deceptive business practices. They charged me more than the price showed on the menu, then pointed to a tiny script on the menu saying “prices subject to change without notice.” Was spoken to very rudely when I commented on this.Food was already extremely high priced to begin with, and was some of the more tasteless sushi I’ve had in a long while. Be careful and make sure to ask for the actual price before... View all feedback.
Very rude owners. They said they were closing soon and we could not eat in, with a full half hour left before they shut.
Bay Sushi is authentic Japanese sushi bar, the kind you see in Japan. It's rare to have a sushi place in Canada that adheres to time-tested, strict Japanese standards in sushi making. The owners are super professional , the chef I think is descended from a sushi chef to the daimyo (Japanese nobleman) of Echizen province...
I was last in this restaurant three years ago, and felt the owners had simply lost interest, or were tired, or whatever. A couple of times after that, I wandered by to get them on a better day, and the place was closed. So this time I came at a little after 7pm on a Thursday. The lights were on, and the sign said open. But when I entered, both the chef and his wife chimed in simultaneously that they were closed. When I protested, she said: We close at 7:30pm . I noted it was 7:10. No, we are closed now. Already cleaned up . What was patently obvious was that they were simply going home early because business so slow. I tried once again- saying it would be a quick takeout order that would net them about $35. Final answer- NO! When I suggested that they needed to be open to have business, and queried whether they DID want business, she lost it completely, yelling at me not to talk like that. I just shook my head and left. For the last time.
If you want the real stuff that tastes like the sushi made in Japan by a top chef there, this is the place. I did not know you could have authentic sushi in Vancouver until I stumbled upon this hidden gem. You have to have discerning taste bud like mine, steeped in the Japanese language and culture to know the difference!
I just read a comment below and the same thing happend to us: They kicked us out because we were with a toddler and a newborn!!! The owner was swearing at us on the sidewalk in a foreign language. He also used the universal language of the middle finger. I could not believe it!
