My goodness! What a delightful meal we had here last night. We live nearby and had guests staying with us and we were having difficulty finding a restaurant open for dinner on a Tuesday evening in Winter, until we remembered this charming hotel. From the kind welcome, the drinks, menu reading and warming fire in the lounge, followed by the classic, simply ambiance of the restaurant, the friendly and efficient staff to the truly wonderful food, the whole experience was faultless. We will be back, regularly. Highly, highly recommended.
The menu featured four main dishes, but only three of them were actually available. This was quite disappointing considering we had made a reservation two weeks in advance. It was my partner's birthday meal and we were both looking forward to trying the missing dish. Unfortunately, we were informed that it would not be available just 10 minutes after placing our order.
We spent four nights at this hotel/restaurant and the main criticism was the limited dinner menu . The pork dish was good but you had to pay extra for vegetables and at one meal the new potatoes definitely tasted re-heated. I am sure this restaurant was fine for a one off meal but not for a stay of over two days. Sauces on the food were too plentiful and strong. Puddings were fine as were the breakfasts. I am not sure how a vegetarian would have coped as the options were even more limited. Beds were lovely and comfy in great surroundings and the staff were excellent but a few extra options in plainer food would have made this place somewhere we would come back to.
An all too brief stop but the Mill End is a lovely hotel with friendly staff that make you feel relaxed. It’s always good, although sadly rare, when your expectations are exceeded.
Had a family meal here to celebrate a special birthday, was impressed with the hotel and food was nice but portions were so small, we are not big eaters and my husband never complains but he said he still felt hungry after 3 courses, ordered the Beef for main at £28 expecting a steak however came up in about 6 very small bite size pieces with a few potatoes about the size of a dice, starter was crab and virtually none existent, would not recommend this restaurant unless you eat before you go!
Mill End, located in Dartmoor, offers a dining experience that is a hit or miss for some visitors. Some praised the exquisite food with thoughtful presentations, while others felt portions were too small and lacked flavor. The staff received mixed reviews, with some finding them professional and attentive, while others felt the service did not match the quality of the food. However, the comfortable rooms, dog-friendly policy, and lovely surroundings were highlighted as positives. Overall, Mill End seems to be a tranquil and elegant spot, with potential for improvement in the dining experience.

Lovely hotel beautiful grounds. The room was clean comfortable, although not very sound proofed we could hear people talking walking about upstairs. The food was exceptional as was the service. A lovely touch when you check out you get a goodie bag with notepad pen, bottles of water homemade fudge. It definitely deserves more than the 3 it has. Rooms: 4

Fantastic stay. Brilliant room and loved the dog friendly box of goodies. Rooms: 5 Service: 5 Location: 5
Furnishings rather worn out. The carpet in particular should be replaced (hard floor is best). The Meavy room is rather dark and the view is of the neighboring room. Only with a lot of imagination can you describe it as a view in the garden. Price performance moderate Rooms: 3 Service: 4 Location: 4

We ate here nightly during our recent stay at the hotel and are a highlight of any stay. The quality, presentation and taste rivals many Michelin starred restaurants, including the nearly Gidleigh Park. The menus are imaginative and changed daily. The ingredients used are always fresh and top quality and I can highly recommend.
Imagine a river in spate right by your door. The most perfect riverside walks to Fingle bridge (the equivalent of a black run due climbs and uneven pathways). The walk to Chagford is pleasant and lovely but this years rain washed these plans away. This is our 7th visit. I love to write and find the juxtaposed modern take on ancient mill on a river perfect for this. Dogs everywhere (again perfect for me) and staff that I have remembered across the years. Much travelled, I just can't help but come back year to this singular little spot that so well suits my writing and love of the moor.
I have been before and it was good but this time it was a complete let down, I am vegan and they assured me they could cater for me but my sandwiches (which were part of my cream tea)were four tiny squares of bread containing a slice of cucumber in two of them, three slices of radish in one and a couple of sprigs of rocket in the other. I am sure they must have forgotten and quickly made these. In today’s world it is easy to get vegan cheeses etc so I am really disappointed and doubt I will bother going again which is a shame as it is a lovely place it’s just a shame the food doesn’t come up to the same standard.
We are regular visitors to the hotel and high up on the list of its many attractions is the excellent restaurant. The menu may be short but the food is fabulous and complemented by thoughtful and attentive service. Wine list is reasonably priced and very interesting. One of our favourite places to eat.
