In 35 years of visits to Wernigerode I have seen it develop from a town where there was almost nowhere to eat to an overwhelming choice of restaurants. However, on a hot Wednesday evening three of my favourites were closed so I discovered this Bavarian outpost. An outside table in this quiet street was perfect and a dark wheat beer very welcome on this very hot day. Chalkboards on the wall announced specials, including Schweinhaxe with sauerkraut and dumpling so, as this is unobtainable in Britain but universal in Germany it is often my first choice. It was a monster! The succulent meat just fell off the bone, burst with flavour, and was perfectly matched with the flavourful dumpling and sharp sauerkraut. My German colleagues claim the best haxe is served in Munich but in my opinion this offering in Wernigerode surpasses it.
This isn't a typical 5-star restaurant, but earns the best possible rating from me for being perfectly what I wanted it to be. This is a traditional German restaurant, and everything was beautifully prepared, perfectly seasoned and delivered in ample proportions. I ate here twice during my visit, the first night enjoying the featured white asparagus with roast pork and all the traditional side dishes. Hearty, tender, delicious. Highly recommend!
