The wait was far too long to enjoy our meal. We waited exactly one hour for our tapas, which we had ordered with drinks as soon as we arrived. Seriously? Not a single olive offered to nibble on like the neighboring tables, nor a kind word of patience… Our 8-year-old child clearly didn't influence the decision to prioritize our table of three. We left as soon as possible. The gratinéed mushrooms were very good. The chorizo was a tough piece of fat. The potatoes were nothing special.
A thoroughly enjoyable evening for three, thanks in no small part to the tapas on offer: They even included 'chipirones, ' which are listed on the menu as 'calamares a la plancha. ' And finally, 'boquerones fritos, ' which I 'd sorely missed at another cozy Spanish restaurant in the southern part of town. In general, the selection of fish tapas here is larger than elsewhere. The bacon-wrapped dates, to name another item from the menu, were generously sized and beautifully moist. Fresh San Miguel beer flowed from the tap. The service, especially the charming waitress who even retrieved my forgotten cell phone after I left the restaurant, was professional and, considering the number of tables occupied yesterday (company party), still impressively fast. Spanish food in Essen—I 'd gladly return to 'Pelayo '!
