The Citadel Cafe - Wanganui
The Citadel Cafe
Description
Once a beloved dining destination, the restaurant has seen a fluctuation in quality that has left some patrons disappointed, particularly with their food offerings and service consistency. While a few guests celebrate exceptional dishes like gourmet burgers and aromatic coffee in a friendly atmosphere, others lament over subpar meals and inattentive service. Highlights include vibrant weekend specials and kid-friendly options, but concerns about food quality, particularly on repeat visits, have caused hesitation among diners. Despite mixed reviews, the café retains charm with its inviting setting and occasional live music.

Was okay, pancakes we a little weird. Meal type: Brunch Price per person: $30–40 Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3 Recommended dishes: Pancakes
Delicious pancakes. They also managed to make a lovely vegan option for breakfast.
Food the first visit was awesome. The second time, it was like we didn't exist. Son drew on the table and got told off. My concern is that even though the felt came off (easily may I add), do you not wipe the tables down after every customer? Also found regulars were treated well, and we were left to constantly ask about ours, etc. You shouldn't have to chase food when you offer table service. Don't recommend it and would not go back in a rush. Service: Dine in Meal type: Brunch Price per person: $100+ Food: 3 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 2
WOW! This place exceeded expectations and has an amazing feel with great staff! Very professional and great team work. They're refined in their tasks, clearing and cleaning the tables in seconds! I was mindblown how good they are there. And the food! Great aromatic mochas and Omg... the best chips with cheese and sauces we have ever eaten! We will visit next time we are in Whanaganui for sure! First thing! They started getting very busy after we arrived, and we didn't have a reservation, but I recommend doing so in case. We were lucky! Popular for clearly great reasons! We visited after 6pm. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $50–60 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
Our first visit. Best Caesar salad I have had in such a long time. Delicious. My partner had the smashed avos and poached eggs no complaints! Good coffee in large mugs. Great service too. Well worth a visit. Service: Dine in Meal type: Brunch Price per person: $60–70 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4
