This restaurant has definitely improved since my last visit a year or two ago. The food was excellent and the service was on point. We will definitely be returning soon! View all feedback.
What Sophie Burnside doesn't like about Agave:
I wanted to treat my mum on Mother's Day to a lovely wine and dine experience. When we arrived it took over 5 minutes for one of the staff members (who was standing around doing nothing) to come and seat us. Upon booking no one had told me it was going to be a buffet. The food was less than impressive, cold and most of it was gone. No one came to our table to ask how the meal was or if we'd like to order a drink so t... View all feedback.
The restaurant itself lacks ambiance, with light cream walls and red stained tables. The lack of tablecloths adds to the starkness of the room, and the lighting could be dimmed for a more intimate feel. However, they have made some nice touches with a stone entranceway and fireplace surround, which look great. The menu offers a variety of meat dishes, mostly beef, as well as fish and seafood options according to availability. The stone-grilled fillet allows diners to cook their own steak at the table, accompanied by scallops, prawns, and a tasty Kilpatrick dipping sauce. Vegetable side dishes are available for order separately. The waitstaff, all female, were pleasant, efficient, and attentive throughout the meal. Our group enjoyed a variety of dishes, with everyone raving about the quality of their meals. The wine list is extensive, and the restaurant is fully licensed. Overall, Agave Castaways is a special place to take visitors, especially those who have never experienced a black sand beach. The location on Karioitahi Beach offers a unique dining experience, with the option to stay overnight in their accommodations and enjoy the beauty spa on site.
A disappointing joint birthday for my Dad and boyfriend. The waitress, as bubbly as she was, didn’t know much about the menu, and didn’t even bring a piece of paper to take orders. Instead she recited the orders back to us 3 times incorrectly. Not a great start. We weren’t even shown the specials and had to go and try to find her in order to change the entrees we wanted. The first bottle of Chardonnay was below average and certainly not worth $40. When it was time for the mains, it was all downhill from there. My dad ordered the stone grill not much can go wrong with that considering you cook it yourself, boyfriend ordered the fish of the day which made him feel sick later on when we got home, and my Mom and I unfortunately ordered the stuff eggplant which was rubbery, half cold half boiling hot, and all round bland. We had to return it because it was genuinely terrible and opted for a couple of entrees instead. When we ordered the second bottle of wine Sauv this time, the waitress didn’t bother to change our glasses or even give us an ice bucket even though every other table had one. I had to go ask another waiter to give us new glasses, and when she eventually came with the new glasses, didn’t pick up the other 5 empty glasses sitting at the end of the table. They stayed there for the next 30 minutes of dining. The interior hasn’t changed for the last however many years and unfortunately it’s an overall waste of a beautiful view. We left Agave tired and disappointed, in a rush to get home and have some proper food. Would not recommend it. Checked out Trip Advisor after the ordeal and there were many comments similar to mine and the ‘managers’ replies were just a copy and paste ‘sorry we will try be better’ message. Meh.
Very nice! Good set up. Staff were cool. Food- great!! Definitely want to come back.
The food is amazing and the staff are lovely with a breathtaking view
Absolute rubbish. Steer very clear over this over priced and inedible slop.
