The Eatery - Waco
The Eatery
Description
A family-run, old-school soul-food spot that divides diners: many praise perfectly fried catfish, smoky mac and cheese, tender greens and warm service, while others report bland or poorly cooked dishes — battered short ribs, meatless chili beans, slimy oxtails and overly sweet Kool‑Aid. Food is made to order and staff are friendly, but inconsistency and occasional cleanliness concerns temper the experience. Worth trying for homestyle Southern comfort, with tempered expectations.

The staff were friendly, and the food was outstanding. I will definitely be returning!
I ordered the short ribs with a cabbage and greens mix, along with chili beans, cornbread, and Kool-Aid. Unfortunately, the short ribs were mostly just fried bones. The chili beans lacked any meat and tasted more like ranch-style beans with some chili seasoning added. The cabbage and greens mix was bland and had little flavor. As for the Kool-Aid, it was overly sweet and tasted like sugar water. I ended up spending $19.97 and felt it was a waste of money. I left 60% of my meal uneaten and went to Wendy's afterward. I was really disappointed with the short ribs, which were simply battered bones. I definitely won't be returning—proceed at your own risk. This is not true soul food!
I visited today in honor of Black History Month. Since I’m not frequently in the area and was craving some delicious food, I decided to check this place out—and I was not disappointed! The catfish was fried to perfection, fresh, and beautifully seasoned. The baked mac and cheese had a wonderful smoky cheese flavor; it’s truly amazing! I will definitely be back! This place is definitely family-owned, and they embody that spirit perfectly!
