What César Matias doesn't like about Kanpai Japanese Cuisine:
the sushi quality has actually declined several years ago, today even completely removed the thunfish from their 'festival (all can eat them)' menu. the personal does not care enough. View all feedback.
Amazing Place, near the river and the Marina, with one of the best views of Gaia. A place to Visit and Enjoy!! Small Restaurant, good environment, and nice people working there. Good Sushi, with good Menu's to eat many Sushi.
Taken here by eldest son and fiancée. You would not be expecting a Japanese restaurant by a Portuguese marina, but that is what you have got in an anonymous concrete cube on the waterfront. The views of the Douro estuary are fantastic. We were treated...to the “all you can eat” selection at the surprising price of €18 each. The sangria jug was only €6-50 and absolutely delicious. “Cutlery” was chopsticks, but if you are a chopstick numpty they do supply a “rookie” band or western knives and forks if needed. You can ask for personal tastes to be accommodated, so we went for no/low chilli content. Starters were a selection of “bites”, followed by a rice and raw salmon seaweed cone. Then “mains” were two plates of a mix of sushi and sashimi. Mooli, wasabi and cucumber accompanied. It was all you could eat as once we had finished another plate or two was offered. Pudding was three different creme brûlées, classic, hazelnut and coffee. The coffee could have been a bit stronger in flavour and all three were slightly under set, but delicious nevertheless.
Low quality sushi. I didn't find much fish. we took rodisio. sashimi de tuna really tasted like tuna, not fresh. However, the environment is excellent, in view is beautiful, service art.

The restaurant is quite nice inside with its modern, minimalistic furniture and dim lighting. When we arrived the sun was setting and the view is great, even for us that live around and sunsets by the atlantic are nothing new. This was our first time...here though after trying to book a table for many weekends with no luck, so we ventured there on a Thursday. We were immediately seated and the restaurant was busy but still with a couple of empty tables. Staff consisted mainly of girls in their 20’s and service was mixed... it started really bad when we’re asked: “do you know what you want”, when it should’ve been “welcome! have you been here before?”... so i asked for drinks in the same spirit: “how do we order some drinks”? because there was a food menu but not a drinks one... the girl kept her enthusiasm and just said she would get the list, next thing you know they were dropped on the table. Sangria aside (and no it doesnt cost €6.50 like someone wrote before me but €16.50 and its a small jug we went for the set menu ‘eat all you want for €18 pp. You all must know from other reviews what it consists of so I am not going to go over it... just want to say I am a sushi/sashimi and also a miso/noodles fan and even though there was quite a bit of sushi, there wasn’t enough sashimi and we were treated to a lot of fusion stuff that just didnt cut it... like a tasteless tube of mozzarella tempura... or calamari, unnecessary fillers. They had a chance to throw in some other Japanese dishes, a little miso broth would make a great starter alongside the raw salmon cone but hey its just me. No Yakitori either... which in Portugal its just weird... Instead we were treated to loads of sushi which wasn’t great, the rice was a little mushy in places and the sashimi was little in comparison and it wasnt nicely cut, actually rather small. Remember we went for the “all you can eat”? after the main course we were asked if we wanted more.. we’d had enough to be honest but I asked for some more sashimi. We were offered 6 slices for 4 people. Nice touch. 8 would be the magic number guys. I guess it is ok if you’re rather new to Japanese food or dont eat it too often, specially if you go for the ‘all you can eat’ menu and are not embarrassed to ask for more (to be fair the quantity of food they will bring to you before you’re asked if you want more is enough! , but not great for a seasoned Japanese food lover... there are better places in Porto.
