Brisket sandwich 4-10 The bread and picked onions saved the sandwich the meat was mostly that chew fat stuff Corn bread 0-10 was dense and dry the honey spread tasted like sweet stale old lard I literally spit it out Slaw 0-10 Soggy tasted like it's been sitting in the fridge poorly wrapped for a few days Also was caked in pepper Fries 5-10 stringy fries super greasy and it was like the scraps of a bag bunch of ends
Local spot with what seemed like a small crowd of regulars was ok overall for our visit but nothing outstanding. We were pleased with the receptive welcome and service but disappointed with their cocktails. Despite very enticing descriptions on the menu the drinks seemed watered down and very weak on flavor profiles. The summer sangria which sounded delish, was especially disappointing as it was just like simple cucumber water. We couldn't even make out the white wine. We'd be willing to try this spot again perhaps sticking to beers and also to try their food in particular, the barbecue. Great location, cozy and dimly lit which has huge potential for vibes but hoping they can up their game on the drinks!
Looking for Carolina barbecue place that has lots of great vegetarian options? Yup, this is the place. One of my go to spots in the neighborhood now after struggling to find somewhere with decent service and food. Food 5/5 There are a surprising amount of options for vegetarians, and stuff that can easily be modified. The mac and cheese comes with meat by default, but you can modify it without. Same with the buffalo cauliflower. Hush puppies and cornbread are also on point. Service 5/5 Another bar where they don't just assume you want beer only, and will go out of their way to ask if you're hungry. Why isn't this the norm everywhere?! Like seriously, sometimes even sitting at a table you don't get food service at other restaurants/bars. In any case I shouldn't complain too much about other places in the midst of a good review... but I digress. The Buckstop has great staff. Cleanliness 5/5 Totally spotless. Also not to leave without a bathroom review the bathroom is nothing to write home about, but the fact that they have a sharpee wall with lots of interesting stuff to read while you drop the kids off at the pool is nice. It adds character and personality to an otherwise uneventful pooping experience. Well, on the other hand, at least the experience was uneventful. Atmosphere 5/5 Tons of whiskey on the backbar adds to the Carolina bar look. To be honest I don't even know if Carolina is the right southern trope here, but it looks great. The interior design has lots of wood and black, with ambient mood lighting. As for the air about the place, it's one of the few places in town I can easily strike up a conversation with strangers, which is something I crave. Amazing! Overall 5/5 I've been sitting on the review for too long. Buckstop is either my favorite drinking spot in the west end, or competing for first place. I would say it's the one place you have to go if you're visiting Denman street.
Back in Vancouver after 3 years I was really looking forward to visiting all my favourite food places. Was in the mood for BBQ after a long flight and stopped by at Buckstop, one of my favourite places in my old neighbourhood. But man, was it sad to see : BS used to be really special with its homemade ketchup and BBQ sauce, and amazing meats. The ribs were my favourite, so tender, they fell of the bones just looking at them. What I got today was unacceptable. What happened here? I got 3 big pieces of ribs, but each of them were so dry I could barely get a bite out of them. They almost tasted like they've been reheated in the microwave multiple times. Half of them were big pieces of fat, which tasted old and weird too. My fries looked grey, and I believe the reason is that the deep frier really needs some new oil. The only part I really enjoyed was the coal slaw, which somewhat lived up to my tastebuds memories. The condiments are still great, and service was nice, but I really really hope they find their food mojo back, because like this I have zero reason to go back. This used to be standout food, it's not anymore.
