Solidarity Snacks, serving delicious food to the West Coast community of Ucluelet, since is expanding take-out operations will have its menu posted on-line from the second week of April. Welcome news in these troubled times for Ukee inhabitants, as these ocean-lovers are known...locally, given it has become increasingly difficult to source good food with the constraints of social distancing near or total self-isolation, especially for those in quarantine. This addition service also comes at a time when two of the monotheistic religions, with its various branches, are observing holidays which include a significant focus on food Passover observed by Jewish communities, Easter, observed by Western Christian communities first followed a week later by Eastern Orthodox Christians. Many who are secular celebrate all of them, enjoying the traditional foods of all of the belief systems. It is spring now, over centuries one of the foci in April is food. This year it will be different. Solidarity eateries like it help us to find some normalcy in these abnormal times. My wonderful son his equally wonderful family are in two-week quarantine after a spring-break holiday away what better than to have a delicious chicken pot pie delivered to one’s door in these circumstances, I called the owner to order this family favorite add some other delicious morsels which included a subtly -flavored curry squash soup potato/bacon filled perogies. All sounded very tasty I playfully asked if she also delivered to Vancouver, the city I currently live in. I have had the chicken pot pie a number of times, and it is always delicious, with the crust crispy enough on the top the chicken tasty amply filling the inside of the pie. Its price of is as satisfying as the pie itself. Solidarity is open Monday to Friday a.m, to p.m. Its website has the words “Eat Here or We Will Both Starve”, words which have picked up additional meaning in these times. I have also packed a care package I will post from here, Canada Post willing. Depending on the timing it would be a perfect paring here I list some of the contents they are also standouts for these times. I have sent a family-owned produced dry cider from the Okanagan, called Left Field. It is a bottle will be a perfect foil with its fitting dryness against the creamy crisp chicken pie. Also a Cali Pinot Noir from Mark West which also well pairs well, scrumptious Lorissa’s chicken ginger teriyaki to start. Choc biscuits to finish. Posted by S Fuller
It was my granddaughter who first put me on to the wonders of Solidarity Snacks in Ucluelet on Canada’s West Coast. As she lives in Ukee as Ucluelet is know to locals and she has a discerning and adventurous palate, and, like me,...is a lover of chicken pot pie, I knew her recommendation of chicken pot pie from Solidarity Snacks would be right on point. My son was having a birthday and I had been invited out to join him and his family to celebrate. I was taking them out for dinner but as my son was born shortly after noon, we had celebrated with a lunch often, and I wished to do so this birthday as well. So with this strong and informed recommendation, rather than make a chicken pot pie myself, I decided to get one from Solidarity Snacks to then take home for the special lunch time commemoration. I called the wonderful owner of this great eatery and asked her to reserve a pie for us on my son’s birthday. My daughter-in-law picked it up for our lunch, and it was perfect. The crust was both crispy and substantial enough, and the chicken filling was tasty, with enough chicken to make one feel one was indeed eating a chicken pie and not a gravy chicken pie, as is too often the case. On subsequent visits I have had the chicken pot pie again, most recently this past December, and each time it consistently delivers, as it had the first time. It is open from to for snacks and lunches from its deli, and has a fairly large selection of frozen dishes, which include pies, curries and soups, for sale. On Fridays, it does donairs and for this month of January, it will have Chinese food available on Wednesdays, perfect for the ringing in of the new lunar year on January which this year is the first animal year in the cycle, named, The Year of the Rat. Solidarity Snacks also offers catering, promising that no picnic is too small or event too big. It is mostly closed for the holiday season and not open its regular hours of to pm until March I but can be contacted for certain catering jobs. Next time I am in Ukee I will be sure to head down to Solidarity Snacks in solidarity with those in eateries who work hard keeping us deliciously fed. Posted by S Fuller
